It was late on a Friday evening, you were getting ready for a movie marathon. Everyone else was away for the weekend, leaving you with nothing else to do. You sat on the countertop listening to muffled sound of the television playing commercials in the other room and the popping of the stovetop popcorn. With all the hype of the upcoming Stab 6 movie coming out, almost every channel was playing all five Stab movies back to back all day. The first movie was said to be based on actual murders in Woodsboro, the small town you moved to. But the three years you've lived here have been pretty quiet, so that fact didn't bother you.
The landline started ringing, cutting into the silence and snapping you out of your thoughts. Curious, you glanced at the clock hanging on the wall. 9:55pm--Who could possibly be calling you at this hour? You hesitate, but curiosity gets the best of you.
"...Hello?" you answered.
"Hello?" the voice inquired back. This left you confused, so you followed with another question.
"Who's calling?"
"Who am I speaking to?"
Now you were completely baffled.
"If you don't know, why'd you call? You must have the wrong number."
"Oh, I'm sorry," the voice apologized.
"It happens. Have a good night," you hang up the phone and turn your attention back to the stove. The popcorn is almost ready when your phone rings once more. You pick it up with less hesitation.
"Yes?"
"It's me again. I dialed the wrong number." It was the same voice from before.
"Then why'd you dial it again? That's pretty silly." This whole scenario is giving you an ominous sense of déjà vu.
"To apologize."
"It's alright. Goodbye now." You go to hang the phone up, but the voice stops you.
"Wait, wait! Don't hang up. I wanna talk to you." You remain silent for a moment, removing the still popping popcorn from the stove. "What's that noise?"
"Popcorn. I'm about to watch the Stab movie marathon on tv." You aren't sure why you're holding this conversation with a complete stranger, but you decide to humor him for the time being. Company is company after all, and you are alone.
"Ohh--you like scary movies?" The caller on the other end sounds intrigued by your response.
"Yeah, I love a good horror movie! I just wish they made the characters more real. Like, if you were about to be killed by one of these guys, any person with a functioning brain would either one: fight back, or two: try and get the hell out of there."
You hear the man on the other end hum in agreement as the movie starts in the other room.
"Listen, I really gotta go now. Goodnight."
"Wait- Don't hang up--" You place the phone back on the receiver and turn around to grab your bowl of popcorn. The phone rings again, and you pick it up almost instantly.
"Hello?" Your greeting is much more irritated the third time around.
"Don't you DARE hang up on me again or you're gonna end up DEAD!" The sudden and violent change of his tone catches you off guard. You don't say anything. "Good girl..."
"What do you want?" You tried to sound threatening, but the tension was obvious in your voice. This seemed to amuse the man.
"I want to play a game.." Then it hit you. You could hear the Stab movie in the background playing out a similar scene. This must be some creep Stab fanatic playing prank calls on a bunch of people.
"Fuck you." You've had enough, and slammed the phone back down. Moments later, the window behind you breaks and shatters as a dark figure jumps into your house wielding a knife.
You immediately panic as the man lifts his head to looks at you through a creepy white ghost mask. He chases you into the living room, where you dart for the front door. When you realize it's locked, you swiftly turn around and duck just in time to dodge the knife. You take advantage of this moment to punch the intruder in the neck and then give him another kick to the head as he's still down. Making sure he's making no attempt to get up, you dash back through the house and out the back door to your neighbor's house.
Fortunately they are still up and hurry you to the police station where you report the break in and attack. You sit on the bench at the station deep in thought. Your heart is still racing. Hopefully you'll be safe here for the night.
