The Dawn Before Day

Katherine Forges whipped her head around as the door slammed shut behind her.

Oh, crap.

*~*~*1 hour earlier*~*~*

The bell rang, ripping a bored Katherine out of her thoughts. She stood up, gathered her books and trudged out of the classroom like a zombie.

Immediately, Katherine was cornered by the "popular crowd." Patricia—their leader—stepped forward and said, "Hello, Katherine," with fake enthusiasm.

"Hi," Katherine mumbled to the floor. She sub-consciously twirled one of her bright red curls in her fingers as she spoke.

"Dear, how many times have I told you to look at me when you speak?" Patricia demanded. She tapped her heels impatiently.

Katherine said nothing, her eyes still fixed on the floor.

Patricia darted to Katherine and yanked her head up, raking her cheeks with her freshly manicured nails. "And how many times have I told you, to answer me!"

Feeling in an odd mood of stubbornness, instead of answering her usual answer of "I don't know" Katherine stayed silent once more.

"What's wrong with you!" Patricia shouted and roughly threw Katherine to the floor. Katherine always had a hope that a teacher would come by and save her, but the Patricia and her followers always choose the right time and right place to bully Katherine.

Ten minutes later, Katherine had tons of new bruises all over her body, and even more bouncing around in her head. Even after all of the bullying she had received, she didn't tell anyone about it.

When Katherine arrived home, she quickly changed her clothes so as to better cover her bruises. She darted out of the house to avoid her mother. the reason for this being that her mother was always drunk. Always.

As soon as she arrived at her destination, Patricia made herself known once more. She greeted Katherine with a message, from her supposedly loyal boyfriend—which Katherine knew was a lie, she had accidentally seen him kissing another girl behind the school, and when she tried to mention it to Patricia, she waved it off as a lie and beat her even more that day. What was supposed to be a message was really a punch to the stomach. Only then did Patricia come out into the fading light of day.

“Dear, I see you made it!” Patricia squealed. “This will be so much fun!”

Katherine had been forced into sneaking into an abandoned asylum with Patricia’s crew. The only reason she didn’t ditch them, was the Patricia had threatened to make her only friend Rose hate her, and Katherine had seen it happen before, so she wasn’t taking any risks.

*~*~*Present Time*~*~*

Katherine should have known that they would lock her in. Why they would ever tell her to go in first was beyond her imagination. She knew she was smart enough to know when Patricia was going to trick her, yet here she was, locked in an asylum, courtesy of her bullies.

Figuring she could outsmart them this time, Katherine began wandering the asylum, searching for a side or back exit. Soon enough, she got lost. Katherine remembered climbing up three flights of stairs, and taking a few turns somewhere, but she had no idea where she was. Katherine knew that Patricia probably had enough fun and would be inside looking for her, and she knew that when she was found, it wouldn’t be pretty.

Katherine turned another corner and got face to face with Patricia.

Speak—or think—of the devil, and she shall appear, Katherine thought.

Patricia’s golden eyes stared into Katherine’s own green ones. Patricia put her hands on Katherine’s shoulders and said, “Dear, this won’t be good. At all. For you.”

Patricia seemed to be lost too. She kept walking them around in a circle. Eventually, she left one hand on Katherine’s shoulders and fished around in her purse for something. When she pulled out was she looking for, Katherine saw a flash of silver and recognized the item as a phone.

Patricia inspected the small piece of technology, sighed, tossed it back into her purse and mumbled to herself, “No signal,” yet it was still loud enough for Katherine to overhear.

Katherine opened her mouth to say something when she heard a voice—that was definitely not hers or Patricia’s—say, “Come.”

This word was quickly followed by many more voices, all saying the same thing. The voices sounded different, but they all sounded like they had been through torture, and Katherine could relate, but she had a feeling that hers wasn’t as bad as theirs.

As if in a trance, Patricia and Katherine followed the sound of the voices. Katherine knew she shouldn’t be going, but she had no control over her feet or arms, it was as if they had a mind of their own! So Katherine was forced to follow the voices.

Patricia pushed open a door and stepped inside, but Katherine stayed in the hallway. Katherine expected herself to follow, so she was surprised when she stayed outside.

A few seconds later Katherine heard agonizing screams coming from the room; “Katherine! Help me!”

Without a second thought, Katherine somehow managed to make herself barge into the room where she witnessed Patricia being torn apart right before her eyes.

Patricia’s eyes bore into Katherine’s but before she could do anything, what remained of Patricia slumped to the ground. Blood and guts littered the floor as Katherine walked inside, horrified. Katherine usually never showed her emotions, so she wondered why she all of a sudden felt horror run through her blood.

The people that had torn Patricia apart now turned to Katherine. The only way to describe them was that they looked like zombies. Katherine turned around to exit the room and run fast and far away, when one of the zombies blocked her path.

“Must stop, the Dawn Before Day,” the zombies said as one. They repeated the message over and over again, slowly creeping towards Katherine.

“What the ‘Dawn Before Day’?” Katherine asked, desperate.

“Legend of Dawn Before Day. The Dawn Before Day will kill us all, and stop us from our duty. Must kill the Dawn Before Day first.”

“Patricia?” Katherine asked, astonished. How could Patricia be part of a legend?

“No,” the zombies said. “You.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Katherine’s remains lay on the floor, yet they began to slowly moving together, as soon as the zombies left the room.

After a few minutes, Katherine’s head had reformed, yet the rest of her body was still taking time. “Let’s go kill some zombies,” Katherine said to herself, set on getting revenge.

All of a sudden, the door burst open and the zombies returned. One was holding a broom and shovel, while another was holding a lighter. Katherine knew how that would end already. The zombies lit her on fire—all of her—and when ashes were all that remained, they swept them up as if it was nothing.

“Stupid ressurection,” one of the zombies said absentmindedly.

A/N Here is a short Halloween one-shot that I wrote in one day (A.K.A. Today, Halloween). I hope you enjoy it, but the credit does not go all to me! My friend @thebookiestbookworm helped me with the beginning, but she didn't get to finish it with me. She also made my day by saying I was a genius with some of the parts of this one-shot that I thought of. So don't just follow me, follow her too!

Voting and commenting would also be greatly appreciated!

P.S. Check out the song on the side! I put it there because of the title. I may have attached it onto another chapter of another story, but whatever. It's a cool song though, so please enjoy that and this one-shot.
