I hear the water rushing through the walls to refill the toilet in my parents room. It's a sound that I have come to not notice, after so many years, unless I listen for it. I walk over to my bedroom door and turn the knob slowly while lifting it up slightly. It's the only way that I've found to open the door without the hand;e creaking loudly.
I peer down the hall, toward my parents room, and wait. The light creeping out from under their door disappears and I slowly close my door again. They should be asleep within a few minutes.
My phone chirps and I pick it up. Waiting for me is a text from Kevin.
You still coming over?
I smile. I know that after the shitty day I have had, Kevin is the only one that can really make everything alright. He will know how to fix it.
Yeah, my parents are just going to bed. I'll leave in a few minutes.
Can't wait to see you babe.
A smile crosses my face. I feel better already.
After a few more minutes of waiting, I slowly slide the window in my bedroom up. It's still cool enough at night that my parents will have their bedroom window closed, so I don't have to be too quiet, but I still don't want to take any chances. I doubt they would be too receptive of me sneaking out the see Kevin, late at night, even though my eighteenth birthday is just a couple of months away.
I climb through the window and onto the roof. I slowly close the window and walk to the end of the roof. There is a big tree on the far side of the house, with a large enough branch that I can reach out and get into t he tree, Form there, I just climb part way down the tree and drop the last couple of feet to the group. I have done it a few dozen times now, usually when I want to see Kevin past curfew and the hardest part is actually climbing back up the tree to sneak back in.
Once I'm clear of the house, I brush the remnants of the tree from my shirt and start to walk faster. I should have brought a coat. I speed up with the hope that it will help me warm up a little. Not to mention it's almost a mile to Kevin's and I'm really looking forward to seeing him.
The roads are quiet and only one car passes me on my way to Kevin is house. I'm happy when I get there. The temperature had continued to drop and I'm feeling chilled. I should ask Kevin to borrow a hat, or something, for the walk home.
One main reason we hang out at Kevin's house late at night is that his room is in what used to be a cellar of the farmhouse, so there is a separate entrance. It make it easier. I son't have to jump off any roofs or climb trees, but we still try to be quiet, there's no point in waking up his brothers and sets me back down.
I knock on his door which opens and I step inside. Kevin closes the door and turns to me. He smiles. I return it as he lunges forward and lifts me off the floor. He pushes his lips against mine and sets me back down.
"It's so good to see you," I say.
"Yeah, it's good to see you, too."
Kevin takes my hand in his and leads me over to the couch that sits along the back wall of his room. I feel a little sad. We've grown so much time down in his room. I'm going to miss it.
We sit on the couch and he turns to me.
"So, what's up?"
I open my mouth, but nothing comes out. It doesn't make any sense. He should be the one person that I have no problem telling what really happening.
"Bella what is it? Is everything OK?"
I look into his eyes as tears start to form in my eyes. A look of worry crosses his face.
