Chapter oneThe cat rumbles along on the way to gymnastics, "what are you doing?" My mom says, referring to the game I'm playing on my phone, she raises her eyebrows and leans over to get a closer look. "It's a surgery game" I smile and she scrunches her nose. "I want to be a surgeon when I grow up" I smile, my mom looks at me funny. "Don't be silly Annie, your only eleven, it may be what you want now but you'll change your mind, plus don't you think it would be better to be a teacher or.........". I immerse myself back in my game as she keeps babbling on, I'm performing a heart transplant for a patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, I groan at the how common and simply that is, and at the fact that I'm having to play a game and not actaully do it. My mom realizes I'm not listening and stops talking, picking up her phone and dialing one of her friends instead. Next I play the level where I must amputate a leg, I get through it quickly, no mistakes as usual, I want to be in a real operating room, but I'm still eleven, and my mom still thinks I'm crazy.
Part 2
Arriving at Hopkins memorial"Welcome to your internship, where you will be tested for two years based on how well you survive and preform surgery here, only six out of eighteen of you will pass the first test, and then you will be officially on the team, after four years you may take your residency test, if you fail, you must start your internship over, if you succeed you will become a first year resident, and four years later, you may take your attending test, which is much harder, if you fail your right back where you were before the test, so not to bad, if you ace it however, then we welcome you to your first being an attending" speaks a tall brown haired man, I take a deep breath as he continues. "Let's first begin with performing a heart transplant on a patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy" people in the room gasp and start to sweat, but I chuckle, thinking back to the games I would play on my phone till I could finally start my internship, I'm confident in myself. "Alright I need two volunteers to go first" the tall man says, I instantly raise my hand, getting a few stares, before a guy with wavy dark hair raises his as well. We both step up to the table with our surgical team, he gives us a minute to prep as he talks to the other interns. "I'm Caleb" the guy, Caleb, speaks (CALEB AND ANNIE ARE NOT RELATED IN THIS STORY) "oh um I'm Annie" I smile. After we finish scrubbing in and prepping the tall man, who I forgot to mention his name, mr weems, tells us to get started, and just like that I'm in my element. After fifteen minutes I hear an "oh crap" and turn my head, Caleb has accidentally cut a small slit in the right ventricle, he tries to cover it up by saying he just almost cut his hand but dr weems has already noticed. "Your done Logan, that patient would be dead if he were alive" Caleb who I have now learned last name is Logan, steps away from the table. "Only two more hours Leblanc" dr weems says as I finish my last stitch, "I'm already done" I panicked thinking I've done something wrong, he examines my work. "Wow Leblanc, a heart transplant in an hour? That's something a high class attending couldn't do, I'm impressed" he smiles. "Yes sir, thank you sir!" I'm beaming, "alright that's it for today, we start at 4 am tomorrow, be ready.
I smile to myself, I'm not eleven anymore, but my mom does still think I'm crazy.--/--
