A late night summer party and there's a girl I don't know sitting over on a chair by the wall. I'm thinking she's probably from a neighboring town most likely brought here as a date then dumped while whoever she was with went off with someone else. She's pretty too. She had dark hair, almost black, that she just moved into her eyes obviously trying to hide tears.
I slowly approached her and extended my hand to her. She looked at my hand while keeping her eyes adverted. "Hey what's up? You looked a little sad and lonely and I was wondering if you'd like to maybe dance?" She stared at my hand then replied. "Why would you wanna dance with me?" she said still adverting her eyes from me.
"Well I was over there looking at you because I thought you looked like you could use some fun, so why don't you come dance with me maybe I can make you feel at least a little better. It's not right to let a pretty girl be so sad. What do you say?" I smiled reassuringly and she laughed at my compliment as she also wiped her eyes. They had black mascara flowing down her cheeks like black tears, but I just smiled, and after slowly, gently pulling her through the crowd, I took the black hanky from my pocket and wiped her face of them revealing beautiful skin now void of the unnecessary mess of make up.
She put her arms around my neck. I placed my hands on her hips slowly swaying to the music and somehow getting deeply lost in the rhythm of it. "Hey," I spoke just as the music was turned down to prepare for the next song. "Hmm.." she mumbled back. "I still haven't gotten your name?" She broke away from her trance looking at me blankly, "my name is um."
Still a blank look. "Yeah your name." I smiled. She blushed, embarrassment evident on her face. "Oh sorry I was lost in thought. My name is.. Jocelyn, but you can just call me Josie." I smiled gently. "What a pretty name for an equally pretty girl... Josie.. cute too."
Her face flushed slightly again. "What's yours?"
"My name is Winter." she smiled at me this time.
"Yours is cute too.."
"Heh, thanks." She smiled again, this time more confidently.Suddenly my heart started beating faster and I couldn't breathe as she looked into my eyes. She was smiling coyly at me as if she was feeling the same way, but I couldn't be sure.
Her phone began lighting up on the table nearby where she previously had been sitting. Her face changed from holding a smile to holding a mixture of both sadness and anger. Obviously whoever it was, wasn't someone she wanted to speak to, but still she walked away to the table and picked it up. She turned towards me and motioned towards the double doors of the entry hall before exiting through them out into the cool night air.
I decided to follow because, even though I just met her, I was already finding myself as interested as child on Christmas morning. I wanted to see what was inside this wrapped box, inside of this girl. The crush forming itself within me before I could even realize it was happening.
There she stood maybe ten feet away on the phone, pacing in that same mixture of sadness and anger that was also on her face, but seconds later the phone call was over and she walked back to me. She was shivering and only wearing a basic black knee-high dress. She was obviously cold as she smiled at me.
"You look cold. Stay right there." She watched me confusedly as I ran to my car and came back with my sweatshirt in tow.
"Here you go." I handed it over. "So you can stay warm." She pulled the slightly larger than herself sweatshirt over her head.
"Mmm thank you. It's very warm and soft. Oooh and there's a pen in the pocket that's a cool accessory."
I smiled and she smiled back then we both began laughing just before a car pulled up and the window went down to reveal an older professional looking woman who yelled, "Jocelyn get in the car it's time to go I'm on a tight schedule," Josie sighed and turned away.
"One moment mother." She turned back and took the pen from my sweatshirt and wrote her number on my hand and I wrote mine on hers.
"Call me." That's all she said before getting into the car that chauffeured her away and my sweatshirt along with her. A thought came to my mind, "Good thing I left that pen in there and got her number or I wouldn't be getting it back." I smiled to myself before I got into my car with the thought of the excuse to call her on my mind.
