Vanilla's Story (Continued)

Chapter 19: Huge Surprise

I wake up to the smell of something burnt and it activates the smoke alarms. Pushing myself off the bed, I rush downstairs to find smoke clouding me in the kitchen. I see something on the stove and I turn it off and then open the doors so that the smoke can evacuate our house.

"What was that?!" Tanya asks, coming downstairs in her pajamas.

"Something was burning on the stove and I have no idea where mom and dad are," I reply.

Tanya and I go to the bedroom to see if mom and dad are sleeping. They are not there. We went into the garage to see if their car was still there but it wasn't. I called my mom's number and when she picked up I asked, "Mom, where did you and dad go?"

"Sweetie dad and I are at the mall to get you and Tanya a surprise," Mom says.

"Oh ok." I am relieved that they are okay and something bad didn't happen to them.

"Is everything all right at home?"

"Well something on the stove just burned so I had to turn it off."

"Good job."

"Thanks. Bye." I press the red button to end our call.

Tanya looks at me. "Is everything okay?"

"It's fine. We're getting a surprise when they come home." Tanya nods and goes back upstairs. I take a deep breath and walk up to my room to start my day.

After taking a shower I put on a white tank top with a pretty pattern near the neck and a pair of scarlet shorts. I put light green earrings lined with gold on my ears. Then I open a drawer and take out some red bracelets that are light and dark.

Just when I am putting on the finishing touches of my makeup, Tanya comes in. "Hey Vanilla I got some new red nail polish from my friend. Do you want me to put some on?"

"Sure!" I say. When she finishes putting the nail polish on I wait for it to dry and then put my hair into a ponytail. I walk downstairs to see that mom and dad are home.

"You guys are here yay! Now where is the surprise?" I ask. Mom and dad pull out two gift bag with our names on it. One for me and one for Tanya. I reach into my bag and pull out a bunch of new makeup items including new eyeliner, mascara and lipstick.

"Thank you! Thank you!" I say, jumping up and down like a little kid. At that moment Tanya comes downstairs, her hair still glistening with water drops. She must've washed her hair. Tanya takes her bag from mom and dad and when she looks inside, she squeals.

"Is this is the dress I've always wanted to wear?! It's perfect and it's finally here! Oh thank you guys you are the best!" Tanya hugs mom and dad, which I haven't seen her do in forever.

When we calm down from fangirling over our new surprises, I go upstairs to get my phone and when I turn it on, a text from Jaz is on the lock screen. After unlocking my phone I reply her.

J- Did u hear abt the semester exams?
V- Omg I completely forgot
J- Well they are next week so I would study if I were u
V- Ok thx for da reminder

A bomb drops into my stomach. Semester exams were next week? I had to get to studying, because if I didn't pass my parents would yell at me. Not to mention a terrible grade in the gradebook.

I get my textbooks out of my backpack and start studying. I sigh. When was any of this going to get better for me?
