Prologue

It was amazing how fast he popped into my radar. He had such a powerful soul. I was shocked by it's strength. Humans. Usually their souls were weak, clouded with greed and lust. Tainted souls. But this soul was different. It was pure, with so much power waiting to be unleashed. I knew that no matter what, I had to have him. His soul would be mine.

"EAE!" I boomed, the sound echoing around my office. My second in command immediately appeared after being called. My office was nothing spectacular. It was actually quite small, considered that my immortal being has been trapped within these four walls for an eternity. The only thing special about my office was the location. Ah yes, only two people know the location of this office, that being myself and Eae.

"What do you need, sir?" he asked. I was pleased with how efficiently he came at my beck and call.

"I need you to go on a run for me." I could see the surprised look appear on his face. Normally runs were reserved for lesser angels, not for one so close to their master.

"What is so special about this child, sir?" he replied. It did not surprise me that he questioned my motives. Though Eae was strong, he could never match my discipline and control. I sighed out loud. Maybe one day he will learn.
"Why must you question me. Do you not trust me?" Eae only stared, waiting for an explanation. I don't know what possibly made me think to make him my second in command, with how he disrespects my authority so much. "Come over here and feel this, if you must."

Eae came over to my side and and felt the air surrounding me. He knew that when I was envisioning a child, their power could be felt in my aura. His shocked eyes said it all, when he felt the power that came forth, so much that it almost knocked him over.

"I understand, sir." Eae whispered. I assumed that he was still in shock.

"I need him. I need to consume his soul. Get him for me, by any means necessary."

"Yes master." I watched him walk to the portal in my office, that transported to the human realm. I knew this would be fun to watch, so I took my front row seat, and put myself in the eyes of Eae to see what was happening.

Eae exited the portal on the other side, ending up in a run-down church in Carmacks, Yukon nearest the child's home. He walked past the stone altar, down the moth eaten isle, to doors leading out. He opened them with a creak, the sound echoed out in the misty sky. It was dark in the human realm at that time, the moon partially covered with clouds, making it easy for Eae to be concealed in the shadows. As he exited the church and stepped into the night, he took a pause to orient himself. The church was at a four way intersection where no matter where you looked, there was no other building in sight. Every which way, you either saw trees, hills, or mountain ranges. I whispered in his mind the direction to take, and he followed.

Eae walked down the street full of overhanging branches, where there was not another being in sight. The shadows just dark enough to conceal him, but did not block his vision. He walked with purpose, wanting to reach the house before the sun filled the sky again. It took awhile to reach the home of the powerful soul, and by that time the sun was beginning to rise. He decided to take the route of going through the parents to get at the child. I could feel this smirk rise on his face. He wanted to play.

After ringing the doorbell, Eae looked around. There was not another home for miles. Their screams would not be heard.

A man answered the door, a man who I assumed was the father of the powerful soul.

"Can I help you?" He asked in a very tired voice.

"I am here to collect your child. Hand him over or I will take him by force." The man looked at Eae as though he was crazy. Just as he was about to slam the door in Eae's face, Eae responded again, "You will not like it if I have to use force, but I will."

When no change appeared on the man's face, Eae forced himself into the doorway. The door slammed backwards with a loud bang, echoing throughout the area. This caused a woman, assumed wife, to come running into the room. She screamed as she saw Eae take out a sword, and twirl it around in the air. I felt a huge smile appear on Eae's face. He is such a showoff.

As the sword came back down from it's twirl, Eae grasped the handle and swung it around in the air. It came and violently sliced through the man's neck, causing his head to fall to the floor with a loud thump and blood to stain across the walls. The woman screamed again, louder this time, at the sight of her husband's decapitated head, and I could feel Eae roll his eyes at the annoying sound. He whirled around and saw the woman standing in the small doorway that lead to the kitchen.

With a smile on his face he retorted, "That was way too fast. Maybe we should make yours a little slower, hmmm?" The woman gasped, took one look towards the stairs and made a break for it in the other direction. That's where the soul is I murmured to Eae in his mind. He ignored me, though, and went after the woman, his mind too caught up in bloodlust to care. This is why I have his as my second, his unwillingness to end with a job unfinished.

Eae took off after the woman, and found her trying to unlatch the back door, a seemingly impossible task with how much her hands were shaking. I could feel a chuckle rumble throughout Eae's body. It was that second, she turned around, fear shining brightly in her eyes. Eae tackled her to the ground, reaching inside his jacket for the daggers he had concealed. He pinned both of her wrists in one hand, putting one on top of the other, and with a fast swing, impaled a dagger right through both of her palms into the flooring.

A scream rang out breaking the silence of the air yet again. With a second dagger, he traced patterns around her face and body, psychotically smirking as he left a bloody trail wherever he went. Little yelps escaped from the woman with every new line cut, encouraging Eae to continue.

After a while of playing with her like this, I finally told Eae to give it up already and kill her, to complete his mission. She was a bloody mess, cruel designs permanently carved into her skin. He sighed and pierced the dagger straight through her heart, all the while complaining about how I always ruin his fun.

He stood up, wiped the blood off hands, and retraced his footsteps back to the front of the house, toward the staircase. When he got there and looked up, he noticed two children, huddled together on the top step. The boy, I whispered into his mind, I want the boy.

Eae quickly climbed the creaky steps and looked at the children. They were frozen with fear and hugging each other, Eae scoffed in disgust. He got between them so he could scoop up the boy.

"Bastian!" The little girl yelled, "Don't you dare take my brother away from me. Bastian!"

Meanwhile, the boy was struggling in his arms, but it was very little of a fight, almost as if he had already resigned himself to his fate. The little girl, though, she wasn't giving up easily, wrapping her arms tightly around one of Eae's legs. It looked like there would be another one for Eae to kill. Eae restrained the boy by the back of his neck, using his other hand to reach into his jacket to grab his last dagger. Eae was about to take the easiest deathblow, when a voice compelled him to stop. "Please stop, sir. I'll go with you, sir, if you don't harm her," the same phrase was passing through the boy's lips over and over again as he repeated it. Wanting him to complete the mission, I yelled at him to just take the boy and leave. With another sigh, he did. Leaving the girl sobbing on the ground, watching her brother be carted away by his own choice. The little boy, Bastian, in the meantime was silently crying.

Walking back to the church took half the day, and thankfully there were so few cars on the road, that they were able to get by almost as if they had disappeared into thin air. Eae brought Bastian back through the portal in the church, up to my office. I let go of his mind and watched him come in.

"Welcome, Bastian," I said, as a grin grew on my face, "to your new home."
