It was the kind of weather that scared the suicidal. Warm with no humidity, a perfect day to lay in the grass and watch the clouds shipshape into form. It was odd for me to crave a hot coffee on such a hot day, but perhaps that was because I was an odd girl. The coffee shops were my favorite. Their was something so intimate about them. I would see the same strangers everyday, sitting in the same spot, as if their was assigned seating. The shop was quaint and secluded, it felt as though it was detached from the rest of the world. Every Thursday (my favorite day of the week) they played live music. However it was a Tuesday so I would have to wait. I had made my way over to cash register, being as their was no line.
"Noelle, nice to see you again!" I was greeted by the familiar voice of Ben the barista.
I smiled greeting him as I usually did, he tapped away on the cash register without taking his eyes off me. Apparently I was a regular customer so Ben already knew what I would usually order.
"Bring another book with you today?" Ben said motioning to the small novel clutched to my chest.
"The Man In The High Castle." I replied. It was a classical novel, and to be completely honest I was not too fond of the story so far, however I wanted to give it a chance.
"Here you go, one large coffee extra cream no sugar, and a chocolate chip bagel." Ben handed me my order and I turned to make my way over to small table in the back of the cafe, near the window. However to my surprise their was a man already seated in my spot. His hair was dark, slicked back like a greaser boy in the 50's. He had on a leather jacket and what to have appeared to be a cigaret between in fingers. Smoking was not permitted indoors.
I wasn't sure what to do. It wasn't necessarily "my" spot, but it was the same spot I have been sitting in for the past few months now, and I was rather irritated with this man for some unknown reason. I was just about to take my food togo when I heard a familiar melody come out from his silken lips. It was a tune I was all too familiar with, mostly because it was a song that I did not expect a man like him to know.
"I like The Wombats too." I said, the man immediately turned his torso around to face me. His dark eyes fixated into my green ones, and it was if for a moment we were silently waiting for either one of us to blink.
"They're not particularly my genre," his eyes narrowed taking in my appearance before continuing, "however I think I like them more now because you do." I was completely flustered by his bold response.
"That's my spot." I said motioning to where he was seated. I was determined to show him that his cocky attitude did not work on me.
"oh?" he questioned. "I didn't know their were assign seats." He said taking a sip of coffee from his mug.
"Well then, you must be new here." I said holding back any further remark that would fall from my tongue.
"You know, there is room for two darling." The man said pressing the cigarette to his lips. I watched as the smoke left his mouth and slowly disintegrated into the air. Suddenly I was intrigued by him. Without a response I placed my book and food on the laminate table and sat in the chair before him.
"I'm Gerald." He said holding out a hand, with the cigarette loosely slipped between his lips.
"Noelle." I reached between the space between us, linking our hands together.
