It was like a nightmare. The kind where you can only remember flashes of why happened. That is my memory of that night.

I was in second grade and my sister was in first. My brother was only three. My mom had noticed strange behavior in my brother and decided to take him to our pediatrician. My dad was out of town on a business trip so my sister and I had to come along. We waited patiently for the doctor which was followed by waiting for results. That's when my world turned upside down. The doctor came into the room and told my mother that my baby brother had an incurable disease, and needed to go downtown to Children's Hospital immediately. I remember seeing lights of the city flash through my window. I remember nurses holding my screaming brother down while they injected him with needles and I didn't know why. I was scared. I now know that those needles were filled with insulin so that they could bring his blood sugar down from the five hundreds. Is five hundred bad? I'll say this: your blood sugar needs to remain between 100 and 190. So yes, it's very bad. A few days later this person comes in an begins telling my parents the things my brother will never be able to eat. We all were in shock, and didn't know what to do. That's when we found JDRF.
