Chapter 1 – The Show
Jay’s Point of View
After a long journey to London, my best friend Kayla and I were finally nearing the front of the long queue of people waiting to get into the O2 arena. “I wonder whether we’ll hear any new IDs?” Kayla excitedly wondered. “Yes, being the first people in the world to hear a new Avicii track would be unbelievably awesome!” I replied. We had been looking forward to finally seeing our favourite musician live for months now, ever since we had first bought the tickets. We finally reached the front of the queue. “Tickets, please” – we showed our tickets to the attendant and practically ran straight into the huge arena.
The show finally began to come to a close with “Levels”, before Avicii made the signature love heart sign and went off stage. Everyone was still buzzing when the crowd around us slowly began to drift towards the exit. Kayla and I had to hold hands to avoid being separated, and we didn’t know which exit we actually needed to get to, so we set off in a random direction through the crowd. We decided to head to a different door than the majority of the crowd were aiming for in the hope that we would have a quick and more comfortable exit, rather than being crushed by the sweaty and excited crowd.
“Are you sure this is an exit?” I asked Kayla, despite knowing full well that neither of us had been inside the O2 arena before, and there was no way she would know. “Possibly, but there’s got to be plenty of doors in this place, right? I’m sure we’ll find an exit somewhere, and once we get outside, we can re-orientate ourselves.” We were in a long, plain looking and worryingly empty looking corridor, with doors on the side facing away from the arena, none of which seemed to be exits.
There was also a complete lack of any helpful signposting until we got to the end of the corridor, where we saw a sign pointing towards an exit, and another sign pointing towards the dressing rooms. “I think we might be back-stage…” suggested Kayla. I was pretty sure she was right, and it certainly explained the plain décor, and the lack of signposting. “Yes, I think we are, wouldn’t it be funny if we ran into Avicii or someone?” we both giggled at the thought.
The door before the exit had a piece of paper stuck to it with sticky tack, and the letters “AVICII” were written across it with big marker pen. “Do you think we should see whether the door is open?” Kayla asked. “Maybe, but we’re not supposed to, right? I mean, we’re probably not even allowed to be in this corridor right now! Anyway, if I were famous, I wouldn’t want people just wandering into my dressing room”
Kayla had just changed her mind and was starting to open the door labelled “EXIT”, and we were briefly refreshed by the sudden burst of cool night air. Kayla walked through the exit, clearly expecting me to follow her. I turned around instinctively, and my gut reaction was that I had been caught, and was just about to be told off by some kind of security guard, but I was wrong. Standing right in front of me, looking a little tired, was Tim Bergling himself.
“Hi…” I awkwardly muttered. Then he appeared to have noticed me.
Tim’s Point of View
Having safely put away the memory sticks that contained all the music I needed for DJing and drunk a much needed glass of water, I went out into the corridor, intending to go and find Ash, my manager, who had texted me that he had just finished talking to the promoters. I was pretty tired, and was hoping he would give the all clear for me to take a taxi to the hotel.
However, as I slung my coat over my arm and looked up and down the long corridor, wondering which direction the promoter’s offices were in, I noticed an unfamiliar girl standing next to the stage door, looking at me. “Hi…” she said somewhat awkwardly, looking just as surprised to see me as I was to see her.
My first impression was that she was pretty, and I immediately noticed her soft-looking brown hair. She was dressed in skinny jeans and a fan t-shirt. “Hi…” I started, feeling somewhat confused on how to react to a fan standing alone in the middle of the back-stage area, who had just started a conversation. “Are you looking for someone?” I suggested before realising that she didn’t look like the sort of fangirl who would go looking for my dressing room unpermitted, unlike many fans I had met in my previous years of touring.
Jay’s Point of View
“Ehrm… No, not really, I was just looking for the exit, I think I went the wrong way, and…” I explained somewhat hastily, still shocked by the sheer presence of my crush standing right in front of me for the first time in my life.
“It’s okay, it happens to the best of us. Did you by any chance walk past the promoter’s offices? I don’t really know where they are, and my manager just texted me that he was there” he replied.
“No, I haven’t actually, but it’s so cool to meet you in person!” I had always been more interested in the music itself than the rumours, magazine articles and hype that surrounded it, but nonetheless it was becoming increasingly difficult to suppress my excitement.
Tim was every bit as good looking as he was in the many photos I had seen of him online, and from his modelling photoshoot that appeared in the Ralph Lauren magazine. The only difference was that his bright blue eyes twinkled in the most amazing way, something that a photograph could never properly capture.
He took a few steps closer and looked into my eyes. “You’re a really pretty girl, you know, what’s your name? I'm Tim, but you probably already know that...” he asked carefully.
“Jay” I replied, still feeling a little shy.
“Would you like an autograph, since this would be a good opportunity?” he asked, sounding very friendly and genuine, although somewhat shy too.
“Sure! Wow, I wasn’t expecting this at all!”
“You can come inside my dressing room if you want to, I’ve got a big stash of pens and photos in there, unless you have anything on you right now that you want me to sign?”
“No, I don’t think I have anything, no”
“Well, come on in then!”
Now I really was feeling very excited. Not only was a guy I had had a crush on for a long time showing interested in me, it was Avicii himself. And I had just been invited into his dressing room. My nervous anticipation and excitement were just about to spill over…
