She wrapped her fingers around mine and her body was pressed against my back. Her face was next to mine and I could feel her breath on my cheek.
"Hold your hands like this." She readjusted my hands. When she stepped away, releasing me, I felt cold. I punched and lost balance. Falling towards the ground, I closed my eyes for a hard landing but instead felt something warm and soft under and against my body. I opened my eyes, looked down and saw Luci under me, holding my body supportively and she was slightly startled; my heart was racing, cheeks red. She came out from under me and helped me up.
"Hey, err, you should, um get something to eat. Need to keep your strength up. I'll take you to Aunties. Come on." She said awkwardly scratching the back of her head.
"Ok?" I questioned. She snatched my hand and dragged me to a another new tent that smelt of cooking food and I felt my stomach growl; I blush and Luci laughs.
"That hungry, huh?" Luci smiled and I felt relieved to see her smiling; I nodded, smiling with her as she took me to a table spread with food and my stomach growled again.
"Weeeell, hi there Hun! Eat your fill! Everyone's welcome here at Aunties." A large woman who had a big friendly smile said.
Luci then told me to sit down, and I found an empty table. I sat at it and Luci began pilling my plate with food. She then set it in front of me.
"Eat," she said, sitting opposite me with a smile and resting her head on a hand. I took a fork and scooped in a forkful of food; it tasted so good. I began to wolf it down, feeling Luci's eyes on me the whole time but I didn't care and didn't stop until every scrap was gone.
"How long has it been since you last ate?!" She asked.
"Erm, a couple weeks?" I said embarrassed.
"Do you need more food? I can get you some if you need me to."
And then the ferocious growl of an empty stomach ended her sentence. Luci's face turned red and she seemed embarrassed, grinning shyly at me and we laughed as she fetched me some more food; she got some for herself too and we talked as we ate, sharing memories and laughs until we had lost track of time. I noticed the bright sparks in her eyes a she laughed and she tucked a stray hair behind her ear.
"You know, it's funny. I hate emotions, but I can't stop smiling..."
"Well that's a good thing! It means you're happy."
"What is this "happy" thing you speak of?" She tilted her head to the side and looked confused.
"Happiness, it's an emotion, it means that..." I struggled to explain it, to put such a bright feeling into words. Luci sat there, almost patiently waiting for my explanation.
"Happiness is the feeling of enjoying yourself: everything seems bright and good and just...right. Everything seems right."
She smiled a bit more at my answer. "Well, glad I heard that, because that's how I feel right now. What did you call it? Happiness?"
"Yes."
"Well I'm happy right now I guess." She was speaking as if she were flustered. She seemed to also be carefully choosing her words. I wondered why, but soon shrugged it off and finished my meal, savouring every last bite.
"Are you happy right now, Dawn?" Luci asked, still beaming.
I couldn't help but return her smile. "Yes, I am. I'm happier than I have been in a long time. Thank you, Luci."
"For what?"
"For bringing back my happiness, of course." I gave her a big smile. Her face turned red immediately. She turned her head away and covered her cheeks with her hand so I couldn't see.
"Y-yeah, well, whatever. Just hurry up so we can go."
"Aww, what's the rush 'shug?" The large woman from before came up behind us, a big grin warm on her face.
Luci just shrugged, still hiding her face with her hands. "Nothing, Auntie, don't worry."
"Hm, you always mean something when you say nothing, but I ain't gonna pry; who's your cute new friend with the red hair and large appetite?"
I suddenly felt embarrassed. Did I really eat that much? "Auntie, this is Dawn. She's just a new recruit I found yesterday."
"Hiya! I'm Marjorie, but you can call me Mar. Luci calls me Auntie. Only close people can do that. Now, do you just love my cookin' or are ya really that hungry?" She asked with grin; I couldn't help but smile with her.
"Both," I answered and Mar nodded her head in approval.
"Both is a good answer: the hungrier ya are, the more of my cookin' you'll want to eat!" She laughed.
