I knocked on the door, and Caleb opened it. He gave me his signature gorgeous smile.
"Hey, Sydney! Come in, Annie's upstairs." Caleb stepped aside and let me in.
"Thanks." I said while smiling awkwardly at him. He doesn't know how hard it is for me not to run up to him and kiss him. It's hard to control sometimes, especially when he looks really cute...
Today he had his hair messy (but really cute), and he was wearing a white shirt with blue stripes going across near his waist, and some blue shorts.
I couldn't help but stare at him and his beautiful face, his gorgeous hair, and his lips were sculpted so perfectly that he was probably a great kisser...
"Do I look funny?" He asked.
I shook out of my gaze. I guess I was staring... "No, you look...handsome. No, you look great! I mean, you are handsome, but—"
Caleb laughed. I loved the way he laughed. "Thanks, Syd. I always knew I was flawless." Caleb pretended to flip his hair while I laughed.
Annie came downstairs and hugged me. "Hey, Syd! Ready to sleepover tonight?"
I nodded. "Sure am!"
"Great!" Annie exclaimed. "Come on, let's go on the trampoline!"
"But—"
"Come on!" Annie cried while dragging me outside. I kinda wanted to keep talking to Caleb, because it wasn't awkward for me to talk to him, I loved our conversations.
Plus it gave me an opportunity to hear his laugh and stare at his gorgeous face.
Annie and I played on the trampoline until sunset. When I climbed out of the trampoline, I saw Caleb standing on he balcony smiling at me.
I blushed and walked over. He never took his eyes off of me. "What? Did I look funny?" I asked, mimicking what he said earlier.
He laughed. Gosh, I love his laugh! I should record it and make it my ringtone...
"You're cute." He said straight off the bat.
I blushed even more. Caleb thinks I'm cute?
"I meant you're funny by saying cute. I mean, you are really pretty, but—"
"I get it, Caleb. Thanks for the compliment." I said while hugging him.
He wrapped his arms around my waist as I wrapped mine around his. He smelled like his dogs, but I didn't care. I didn't want to ever let go.
Annie cleared her throat behind us. I pulled away as she said, "Okay lovebirds, let's go inside. And stop stealing my friend, Caleb!"
I laughed awkwardly and went inside with Annie. I really hope that tonight I get a chance to talk with Caleb.
•••
After Annie fell asleep I went outside and stood on the balcony, looking at the stars when Caleb came out to join me.
"They're beautiful, aren't they?" I said.
"Not as beautiful as you." He said.
I blushed and looked over at him. He laughed awkwardly and cleared his throat. "Sorry, that was random."
"Don't be sorry. That was really sweet." I said while smiling.
He smiled back and hugged me. I hugged him back.
"What's this for?" I asked.
"I don't know, I guess I just love hugging you." He said.
We hugged for what felt like a lifetime before he pulled away and grabbed a blanket from inside.
We sat together on the blanket and just talked...we talked about each other, life, and God, and what we thought about the universe.
"What do you think Heaven looks like?" I asked.
Caleb shrugged. "I don't know, but I bet it's peaceful, and everyone is kind to each other, and that we sleep on clouds..."
I laughed. "You always know how to crack people up."
"I try." He said as we laughed.
When we stopped laughing he looked over at me and smiled. We locked eyes for a moment.
Caleb then started scooting closer. So did I. Was this our moment? Was this finally happening?
Caleb leaned in and closed his eyes. I did the same. Our foreheads touched, then our noses. I could feel his breath. I opened my eyes a bit to see his lips about an inch from mine and they started to pucker up before I panicked and pulled away.
He opened his eyes and looked disappointed. "What's wrong?"
"We can't do this, Caleb."
"Why not?" He asked.
"Because...because you were probably gonna kiss me only for my sake!" I blurted.
"What?" He asked.
"I don't think you like me the way I like you, Caleb. I'm sorry." I got up and ran towards Annie's room.
"Sydney! Sydney, wait!" Caleb called while running after me.
Him being a baseball player made it hard to run from him, but I managed to get far enough. I got to Annie's room and quickly shut the door.
Annie shot up and shrieked, then realized that I was the one to slam the door.
"Syd? What's wrong?" She asked when she saw my face.
Hot and salty tears were streaming down my cheeks. Why was I so stupid to reject him? My crush was about to kiss me, my dream, but I just rejected him and threw it out the window like a piece of crumpled up paper.
"Syd? Talk to me! What happened?" Annie asked while hugging me.
"Nothing." I answered.
"Then why are you crying?" She asked again.
I shrugged. "Puberty and hormones, I guess." I lied.
Annie nodded. "TMI, but okay. Let's go to sleep."
I nodded back and climbed into my sleeping bag.
I couldn't fall asleep, though, because I kept thinking about Caleb and how stupid I was to reject him like that. Now I feel bad. Did he really like me that way? I wasn't sure.
And little did I know, he was outside the door all night, waiting to see if I'd come out so he could talk to me.
And little did he know that I was now scared to talk him, and now I wanted to avoid him.
Forever.
