Chapter Two
We stood outside the corner shop, looking into the window, where he was standing at the cash register.
“You know he might get a little suspicious that we’re gawking at him.” I said as I headed for the door. “I’ll let you order.” I laughed.
The bells hung on the door gave a lively jingle as we walked into the shop. He looked up as we walked in and took a seat at one of the two-seater tables. He waited until we were seated before approaching us.
“Can I take your order?” he asked.
Trinh and I picked up the menus and scanned our eyes through all the breakfast options. The corner shop was pretty empty, apart from him and probably the chef, we were the only ones here. I knew why Trinh wanted to eat here…To see him.
“One bacon and egg toastie.” I replied.
He quickly scribbled it down onto the piece of paper before turning to look at Trinh.
“Bacon and eggs thanks.” She replied.
He scribbled that down too before heading off.
I leaned over slightly towards her. “Do you even know what his name is?” I whispered.
“It’s Chris.”
“Do you guys have any shifts together?”
“Yeah, one. On Friday.”
“When’s your shift today?”
“At like three I think.”
“TALK TO THE DUDE!” I exclaimed.
“Shut up! He might hear you!”
“He might hear me if I yell out: TRINH LOVES YOU! As well!” I laughed.
“Don’t you dare.” She threatened.
“Just watch me.”
“Miss I-have-a-short-nightgown…” she teased.
“Oi! Shut up! It was your fault!”
The guy came back out and placed the two plates in front of us on the table.
“Thanks.” I said as I picked up the knife and fork.
“Thankyouuuu…” Trinh said, gazing at him as he began to walk away.
“Staring..Staring..tutut..” I teased.
“I’m not staring!” she protested, crossing her arms.
“Yeah right.” I replied as I put the knife and fork down and picked up the toastie. I shoved mouthfuls into my mouth as I watched Trinh eating in annoyance. “Hurry up. Just cause you wanna see him more doesn’t mean you have to eat that slowly.”
“I’M NOOOT!” she wined, eating quickly.
“Oh yeah, when’s that dude moving in?” I asked, as I brushed the bread crumbs off my mouth.
“I think today.”
“Already? Let me guess…I have to move out because he’s moving into my room.”
She nodded.
“Why is it always my room!?” I exclaimed. My room was a complete mess and I could not be bothered moving everything across to the room next door.
“Cause you had the other bedroom! Do you think both of us are gonna fit into the tiny room? My master bedroom is much better!” she grinned.
“Next time we move, I get the master bedroom.” I said as Trinh finished up breakfast. “Hurry up, I have to move into your room. I wanna make sure I don’t forget anything.” I nagged.
“Patience. Why don’t you go pay?”
“Are you nuts? You owe me, so you have to pay. Crazy girl.” I replied.
“Alright, alright. I’m done.” She said as she got up. I followed her to the counter where she paid a total sum of twenty one dollars and eighty cents. We walked out of the shop, where the bells on the door gave off another lively jingle.
“Luckily for me, I have to get no job over the holidays.” I beamed.
“Ha…ha…ha…My parents say I spend too much money, so I have to go work for some stuff myself.”
“Are you going back to visit your parents anytime soon?”
“Nah, the car trip is a bore, also, we still pay rent if we go you know!” she exclaimed. “Are you going then?” she asked.
“Nah, probably not.” We’d moved to the south side of the city to go to uni since travelling from my house to the uni would take 2 hours and then 2 hours going back. It would just be too inconvenient. It’d been half a year since I’d last seen my parents, but I figured they’d come up to visit sometime soon, so it didn’t bother me too much, although I did miss them.
