“Riley”
I groaned and rolled onto my stomach.
“Riley, you have to wake up now, you have to eat breakfast.”
“Ughh,” I groaned again and buried my head underneath my pillow.
“Fine, I’ll come back in 5 minutes and if you’re not sitting up and awake eating, you’ll be in trouble. Okay?”
“Yesss,” I mumbled from under the pillow. I rolled over once I heard the woman leave and close the door. I blinked a few times trying to get them to focus. I looked at the tray she left on the table next to my bed and my stomach grumbled. I didn’t want to eat but I had to try or else I’ll get in trouble. Ugh, the people here aren’t that welcoming. Well, that’s presuming I’m new here because I can’t remember a thing before the time I woke up here and heard the nurse and a manly figure talking about me outside my room. I really don’t know why I’m here or what I did to get here. I don’t even know what this place is. I don’t even really know who I am. The clipboard that was hanging at the end of my bed was taken away and sitting on a desk somewhere outside this room. It has all my information on it. I know it. I need to be really good so they’ll stop watching me like they’re hawks. If I find something out it could help me remember how I got here.
I looked over at the tray again, contemplating what to eat. The food didn’t look very appetising. There was a bowl of oats, a choc chip cookie, a pancake that seemed to be burnt and a small glass of apple juice. It all looked disgusting, except the cookie. I grabbed the cookie and took a bite. It wasn’t too bad but it wasn’t the best cookie in the world either. I took a second bite of the biscuit when the small nurse walked in.
‘Yay! You’re eating! That’s great!’ she said really enthusiastically. Why was she so happy I was eating? It’s not that great of an achievement.
She walked over to the corner of the room and sat in the small chair. She just watched me eat. It freaked me out but I thought she would never leaver unless she saw me finish food and I didn’t want her here forever. When I finished the cookie she jumped up out of the chair and came to the side of my bed.
‘You finished it! Why don’t you eat something else?’ she asked in a quiet voice trying to be nice.
‘Uhm, no thanks,’ I replied, not wanting her to force food down my throat.
‘Oh c’mon, just half of the pancake for now then. Everyone loves pancakes,’ she wouldn’t stop trying to get me to eat.
‘Fine,’ I sighed.
I picked the tray up and put it on my lap. I cut the brown pancake into small pieces. She waited until I had eaten nearly half of the whole pancake before she left. The door clicked and I swallowed what was left of the pancake in my mouth. It wasn’t actually that bad. I ate some more pieces and stared at the plain white wall across from me. The pancake tasted familiar. It looked and smelt familiar. I remembered the smell and texture of a slightly burnt pancake. Where did I remember it from though? I took another bite and hoped it helped me remember more. I was chewing until I remembered being inside a massive kitchen, cooking pancakes, and there were other people in the room with me. I didn’t remember who they were or what they looked like. But I hoped it would come to me eventually.
The nurse eventually walked in later and took the tray away. She gave me a glass of water and left when she saw I was trying to sleep. I had nothing else to do so I just slept and hoped I would remember.
