I had a very... strange childhood because of the nature of my parent's jobs. My father Tulius was a jester in the royal court.  My mother was.... well to put it bluntly a whore. I never really knew me mum because my father refused to have me around that "filth" as he called her. He was very serious for a jester unless it was show time. I would often sit to watch preform for the royals and see there faces light up with delight. Oh how it made me feel to see happiness on someone's face it made me happy to. I longed to make people happy and i begged and plead to preform with my father but to no avail. "I want my son to be better than a fool." He would say. Finally when i was 10 after all the pleading and begging he said "If you learn to play a lute or a lyre you can play it while i preform." I was overjoyed and rush down to the square and started asking where I could find a lyre or a lute. "Gorden's" said my favorite peddler, Ronnie. I rushed down to the shop and went inside. Gorden was a very tall scrawny kind a guy with fingers that looked like twisted twigs but he was one of the most friendliest shopkeeper's around. "Hello Jared, why the hurry?" He said stroking his mangled beard. "Father said I could help him with his act if I learned to play a lute or a lyre and i heard you had one from Ronnie. You do don't you?" He nodded with a mischievous grin that exposed his yellow teeth and gestured to follow him. I smiled and followed him to the back of the shop and there was a small, brown lute. I looked up to Gorden and asked "How much?" He looked me over looking very thoughtful. He took it off the shelf and handed it to me and said "If you can play a simple tune no charge for the lute and lessons for more advanced songs." I was surprised and nervous but I strummed the strings and a sound like nothing else ive ever heard came from it. "That was more beautiful than a stream in springtime" I thanked him and ran straight to my father to show him what I had. He was very impressed and proud of me and let me help him with his next performance. I spent 4 years learning new tricks with Gorden and preforming with my father. One day on my way to the Hall of Lords a heard a scream. I sprinted toward the cry for help to see a woman being robbed of what little she had. The robber had his back to me with a dagger against the woman's throat I crept as quiet as i could to get as close as i could thinking what could I do? I had no weapons or skills with fighting? All i had was my prized possession, my lute. I knew what I had to do butI hated the thought of it. I grabbed my lute by its neck and slammed as hard as I could against the back of the man's head. My lute shattered, the stings broke and flew everywhere, one even hit me in the corner of my mouth leaving a cut and eventually a scar. The robber laid on the ground knocked out but still very much alive. I yelled for the guards and only one came to see a woman in tears, a lifeless body, and a young boy with a cut on his lip. He took the man away after me and the woman explained what happened. The woman thanked me. "Anyone else would have done the same thing. I was just here first." I tried to sound brave but my voice quivers and shakes not because of what i had done but because of what happened to my lute. I think she knew what was wrong but she didn't say anything. "My name's Mara what's yours?" she asked. I had heard that name before but I could not place it. "Jared" I said. She froze. "J-J-Jared?" she said shaking slightly. I nodded and then was surprised by a hug stronger than anything i had ever felt. She was crying while I was being crushed. I manged to get out of the hug and saw her smiling and crying. "Are you okay ma'am?" I asked. "I am happier than i ever have been" she said drying her eyes. "Well why's that?" I asked."I have found my little boy" She said hugging me again this time not so tight. Then it clicked in my head. This is my mother.I was in shock. Disbelief. I said "Stay here. I must tell father what happened." I turned to go to my father but she grabbed my arm and said " No you mustn't. He wont let you see me again please don't tell Tulius you met me." I promised her I wouldn't but I had let him know where I was he was expecting me. She let me go to him and I told him what happened. "Did you get her name?" He asked? "Ma- no no i didn't" I said almost spilling the beans we were having for lunch. "What was that?" he asked. "I said no I did not get a name" i repeated with out the first mistake. "No you were about to say a name. What was her name?" He asked again."Mara" I mumbled. "What?" my father asked. "Mara" I said this time clearly and audibly. His face went from suspicion to surprise in less than a second. Then he went back to being calm again. Neither one of brought her back up for the rest of the night. I felt sorrow because of the lose of my lute but i knew I did the right thing. The next day I went and told Gorden about what happened and he asked not to talk about it and advised me to stay away from her. I just did chores and errands for my father for about 2 months with no sign of my mother anywhere. I was lost without my music and I wasn't nearly as happy and my father saw that. I woke up one morning and my father told me to go to courier office there was a package for me. I went down there and got the package and looked for the senders name but there wasn't one. I opened it to find a gorgeous lute with an engraving with just one word. "Mara"The next 3 years were good. I preformed with and without my father, but the end of the 3rd year is something I will never forget. It was close to the harvest, and the festival was going on so my father saw an opportunity to make more money. We devised a great act. The last night of the festival we did our act on the main stage and everything went fine. Until the end.
