I can see them all clearly.
They sit at a long rectangular table that Jeanine is at the head of. Her back is faced to me, but her unnaturally blonde bob gives her away. I can also tell it's her by the way the people around her are seated. They're attentive and have curiosity dripping from their faces.
I'm can't hear what she's saying as there is a sheet of glass that separates the conference hall from where I am in the waiting room, but I'm sure it's a matter of importance.
What I'm not sure of, is why I've been invited to meet with her and her team of advisors. The only thing that I can think of that's worth discussing, is the fact that I was at the top of my initiation class which ended only weeks ago. I have my suspicions that this meeting is about a job offer of sorts, but I'm not sure.
My family comes from a long line of successful Erudite members and have prided themselves on their stature, so it's expected that I travel the same path.
It's always been easy for my relatives to be so successful, but I've struggled trying to follow in their footsteps. They expect a lot out of me and are rarely satisfied by my achievements. They barely bat an eyelash when they heard the news that I was at the highest scoring initiate, but it wasn't out of character for them.
One thing they were, was consistent.
All I needed was the right opportunity to prove them I was worthy of being an Evans, then they would realize.
All of a sudden, Jeanine's assistant, Cyrus, stands up and motions for me to enter. I stand and smooth the blue pencil dress I'm wearing before walking to the glass door and sliding it open.
Everyone stares at me as I enter, but I only notice Jeanine. Her lips are molded into a plastic smile and her eyes are inexpressive, just as they always are.
"Ms. Evans," she greets, "take a seat."
There's only one empty seat, and it's at the opposite head of the table. I sit down and cross my legs before straightening my back, trying to exude confidence.
"I'm sure you're wondering why we arranged this meeting," Jeanine says.
I give her a tight smile and nod once, "I am."
"You see, we've been watching you, Claire," she starts, "You're family has contributed a lot to this faction throughout the years and we expect that you continue the legacy."
There's a certain directness to her voice that makes me believe the conversation we're about to have isn't one that I'll particularly like. I'm not even sure how to respond to her statement, so I wait until she speaks again.
"We need you to do something for us, Claire," Jeanine says.
"And what is that?" I ask.
"As you well know, we are currently trying to deal with the problem that is divergence."
I nod. There has been talk about what Erudite will do about the divergents for a while now, but nothing official has been made public yet.
"We need to form an alliance with Dauntless in order to be strong enough to solve this problem," she continues, "The two of our factions together are undeniably the most powerful and its dire that we are both on the same page."
My nose scrunches slightly at the mention of dauntless. I find them reckless and unamusing. I haven't interacted with them much, because I have absolutely no desire to, but the few times that I have, they've acted crass and heedless.
Jeanine flashes another one of her plastic smiles. "And that's where you come in."
I can feel my chest tightening at her words. I don't want "in" when it comes to dauntless. In fact there's nothing I want less.
