Before Ellis knew what she was doing, her feet were already placed on top of the cold, metal bar. Her grasping hands, shaking neither out fear or excitement, released and ever so slowly did Ellis rise to a standing position, her arms and legs outstretched.
Looking down at the world below, Ellis could only assume that this is what it must feel when skydiving, an activity she had always want to experience. The brunette's legs were shaking and her thoughts replaced the view of cars and lights, her promise with Sivia floated to the front of her mind.
The two girls, best friends for over seven years, had sworn on a damp Autumn day that together they would go skydiving. They had promised to do many things together, from buying matching dresses for their school formal to having children at the same time in order to raise them together. It was a pity, Ellis thought, she had never imagined what she would do if something had happened to Sivia. It was too late now though, Ellis needed to make up her mind. Sivia was gone.
Sivia was smart. Had always been smart and in Ellis' mind, would forever stay smart. Sivia questioned everything, she was always curious, always searching - seeking the truth. Sivia also had a strong sense of judgement, a trait which was so very endearing. Not only did Sivia have a fantastic personality, she was the most beautiful girl Ellis had ever laid eyes on, no one could compete with Sivia. The girl had beautiful golden hair and hundreds of freckles speckling her face, a crooked nose and thin lips. Sivia was perfect.
Ellis, for the longest time ever, had always said that Sivia was going to do something with her life, she was going to make a difference. The brunette would braid Sivia's hair while listing places her friend would go, things she would see and things she would do. Ellis would never do those. No, only Sivia would because Sivia was perfect. However, during those moments Sivia would never comment, she would never voice her actual dreams. Sivia let Ellis do the planning, but she would never leave her friend.
Sivia loved Ellis. And Ellis loved Sivia.
The slamming of the flaky green door, the only gateway to the roof, snapped Ellis from her thoughts. Carefully, the brunette spun her head to face the intruder, her heart now beating rapidly as her face was revealed. Ellis' ink eyes were wide, she hadn't blinked since peering at the street below, and her dark lips were twisted into a shaky, unintentional smile. The girl was still spread eagle on top of the tall metal railing separating the cold concrete of the rooftop ledge and the free fall Ellis was prepared to take.
"I'm gonna jump, Silvia."
Her cracked voice stopped the other girl in her tracks. The fluffy blonde hair floated around the intruder's face like a soft halo, a perfect analogy since the girl did look angelic. Hazel eyes shifted, breaking the ethereal appearance, searching to save the brunette from her fall.
"Silvia," the blonde began, "I'm Ellis." Her beautiful eyes flooded with unleashed tears, hazel orbs glowing like jewels.
The brunette was distracted by this sight but when the words were absorbed confusion painted her face. She was Ellis, the blonde before her Sivia.
But..
This girl couldn't be Sivia.
Sivia was dead.
Ellis tipped back slowly, her bare feet burning cold, toes squirming around the metal. "You're not Ellis. Don't lie. You're not even really Sivia."
The blonde began to cry. Ink caught hazel.
"Where's Sivia?"
The brunette fell.
Sivia loved Ellis. But Ellis didn't love Sivia.
