There are days when life seems unbearable; when time just seems to move so slowly, it makes you wonder why you're on this earth. When you have to deal with days like this, you tend to forget about anything and everything else.
“Mom!” I scream down the stairs as I run to the bathroom. “My alarm didn't go off! I still need to take a shower!”
My mom just stands at the bottom of the stairs and snickers. “Well, Fee, maybe you just need to get a new alarm. This is the second time this has happened.”
“UGH! I don't have time for this. I have to take a shower now!” I start stripping before the doors even closes tightly behind. I am a whirlwind of panic and hurry. I stop and study myself in the mirror. I take in my my long dark brown hair, my huge blue eyes and my full, chapped lips. I jump, rather panicked, into the shower when I hear a knock on the door.
“Felicity? We forgot to set the clocks back an hour, you still have plenty of time.” My mom is practically dying of laughter.
“You. Did. This. On. Purpose.” I say.
“No. But I certainly did get a laugh out of it.” She chortles.
I turn on the shower and get to washing my hair, and watching the water run down the drain. I'm done in about 10 minutes. I get out and rush to my room. My closet stands open as I throw possible clothing choices onto my bed. I finally decide on my Never Shout Never V-Neck and my black skinny jeans. My make up takes a second, as I only put on a thick line of black on my top lids.
I stop, once again, to look at myself in the mirror.
“I am so short.” I say quietly to myself.
Randow High School was reached quickly and I had 15 minutes left to get to class. I walked quickly to class, but I was greeted by a horrid smell. The smell of something rotting. I coughed and wondered how anyone could miss this, then again, no one ever came to this part of the school. It was my secret shortcut.
I sniffed out the smell, feeling more and more like a dog, when I came to the source of it. A heavy, metal door stood between me and figuring out what I was smelling.
I gave a huge shove and the door moved a centimeter. I was going to need some real help with this huge door. I stopped and thought, but was interrupted by the minute bell ringing. I needed to hurry.
I ran up the stairs and stepped into my English class with seconds to spare. I took my usual seat in front of my best friend, Jasper, as the bell rang.
My teacher, Mrs. Leegher, stepped in front of the class, holding a book as if it was made of gold.
"Alright, guys. We are gonna read Huckleberry Finn, insert groan here." She laughed at her own joke and continued talking. "It may take us a little while, but we can make it happen...."
I turned to Jasper and started to whisper to him. " Hey, Jasp. I am going to need your help."
"At your service, cap'n." He saluted. "What services are needed of me?"
"Well. There's this door."
"Oh, golly. A door?" He mocked.
"Yeah. I know it sounds dumb, but there's a rotting smell coming from behind it. I want to see what it is."
"Ha! Whaddya think's gonna be there, Fee? A dead body?" His green eyes flashed laughter. "I'll bet it's just some nasty lunch that someone left, or a raccoon or something that got behind there and died."
"I still wanna see it." I pouted. "Will you please help? The door is really heavy and all metal. I just need someone to assist in the opening of it. It'll be another adventure, like the ones we used to have as kids."
Jasp and I have been friends since kindergarten. We shared the same table and ate the same coloured crayons-the blue ones, they tasted the best. There was a force between us that could never be broken. Since our parents were friends, we always were together. 2 peas in a pod, our parents would say.
"Alright." Jasper finally agreed. " But, when I'm right, you have to give me five bucks."
"It's a deal." We shook as the bell rang.
The day passed in a quick, colourful blur. Before I knew it, I was in my last class of the day, show choir, with Jasper.
I was an Alto 2, the lowest woman voice part. Jasper was a tenor 2, or a baritone. We, of course, shuffled around seats to sit next to each other. It was neccessary. Choir passed as normal, Jasper and I talked, while Miss Robinson yelled. I messed up my notes and Jasper guided me through them. He was always better with music than me.
As school finished, I grabbed Jasper and we walked through the crowd, through the kitchen and underneath the double staircase, and over to the giant metal door.
"Oh, god! What is that smell?!" Jasper wrinkled his nose and covered it with his hand.
"Told you. Now, help me push this open." I grab the door handle and started to pull.
Jasper laughed. "Well, you may wanna pull off the lock, first." He pointed to the chain spanning from the top left to bottom right corners of the door, fasted by metal hooks at the bottom. I quickly yanked the bottom off as Jasper gripped the top and pulled it down to the ground in a giant crash. We gripped the side of the door and slid it open easily.
"Now," Jasper said, "Let's find out where the source of this little smell is coming from."
"Jasper." I gasp and point. A dead, decaying body.
