"What do you think he'll do?" asked Abby. Her worried expressions are so pretty. Come to think of it, everything about her is quite attractive. The way her perfectly curled hair lays soft on her head; its dark brown locks flawlessly framing her face. Her hazel eyes always gleamed at every angle too.
"I'm not sure," I said, looking through some binoculars at G who was lazily walking towards the front entrance. "I don't think anyone is ever going to be sure." Just then the gaurds realized that someone was walking in their direction and jolted into an alert position. Abby shifted the gear into reverse, just to make sure no one saw anything, and drove back. I set the binoculars down and picked up the laptop from my backpack.
"All clear," we heard Stefan say in the ear piece. Abby and I both looked up. G was stepping over a pile of navy blue, which I presume to be the guards that were just standing there, armed. I looked at Abby, dumbfounded, and she just shrugged. Quickly, I disabled the outside alarms so Stefan and G could get inside.
"Gina, I'm handing the mic over to you," I said. Perched in a local Internet Café down the street, she worked her way into the security cameras.Everything was going as planned. Gina was leading Stefan and G as I shut down every alarm that could go off in their path. Finally, they made it to Ross's office door. Disabling the key pad, Stefan and G entered the room.
"I'm in," remarked Stefan. Abby and I highfived and I heard a "yesss" from Gina over the ear piece.
"That was easy," he said making his way behind the desk.
"Stef please," replied Gina, "you couldn't have done it without me."
"Is that so? Well without me, you couldn't have done anything," he said.
"Boy, I don't need you"
"Do too"
"Do not"
"You need me"
"I don't"
"You don't"
"I do need yo-..."Dead air. I could practically hear him smiling. I interrupted the silence by saying, "Uhh let's focus. We can discuss who needs who later."
"Nina, just for the record," barked Gina, "that was not fair."
Stefan smirked."Okay the virus is downloading. We just need a couple of minutes for it to complete," I said. "You two get out of there as soon as it is done."
"Yes ma'am," Stefan replied.
"Hey guys just to let you know, security cameras are frozen. I don't know what just happened or what is going to," Gina said. My mind raced and my fingers flashed across the keyboard trying to make this go as fast as possible. Just then, the sound of a gun cocking chimed three times. I froze. 'Three times for the three locations that we're situated in,' I thought. I looked over through the glass doors at the café only to see empty chairs mocking a frozen Gina as well. I turned the other way and looked out my window.
"NYPD lemme see your hands."
I zoned in on the 9mm pointed at my face.
"I SAID HANDS UP."
Abby and I shot our hands into the air. We could hear Gina's heavy breathing and Stefan gulping. Not a sound was made as black police cars emerged out of no where, their sirens wailing endlessly.I couldn't believe it. They were here the whole time. We stepped out of the car.
"Are you Nina D'Angelo?" an officer asked me. I replied with a yes. "Ma'am you are under arrest for the tampering of government level classified information." Gina stared out the window to our car with a bewildered look. Stefan was already coming out of the front entrance, handcuffed, along with G. I gave the policeman my hands and watched the officers load all of us into the cars like cargo. Stefan, G, and I were in one car while Gina and Abby were in the other.
"Nina, you messed with government stuff?" asked Stefan. I sighed thinking of a way to say this to him.
"Stef, Liste-"
"No, you listen. I didn't sign up for this. Yes, I'm you're friend and all but I didn't think that this would have happened. I thought you were genius man."
"Hey I'm not an Einstein, but this could have actually worked."
"What, after you tapped into classified material?"
"I didn't have a choice!"
"I think you did Nina," said Abby over the ear piece, "We're not that advanced. Going through government material was a bad idea. You must have left a trace somewhere."
"I tried to be extra careful," I promised.
"You couldn't have thought of another way to get this guy?" Asked Stefan.
"This was the safest way possible okay?" I replied.
"Safe? This is anything but safe!"
"You wouldn't understand!"
"Oh I do understand. I understand that you're obsessed with this guy for-"
"FAMILY... For family. And if it was you in my shoes you would have done the same."
I was centimeters from his face. He let go of my arm, though I didn't notice him grabbing it in the first place with all that built up tension. And so we eased away, each taking a sigh of temporary satisfaction. The rest of the ride was pretty quiet after that unnecessary let's-place-the-blame-on-Nina game. I never want to play again, and honestly, I never wanted to bring my friends into this without letting them know what we were messing with. I just thought that if they knew I had to reach the top level to get a virus made by professionals, no one would've had the guts to start an operation like this anyway. I'll have to apologize to them soon, but hey, it could have gone worse.
