"Is there something more / Than what I've been handed / I've been crawling in the dark / Looking for the answer" --Hoobastank
The apartment seemed to be an old warehouse that had been converted, and Dean instantly felt comfortable in the cozy space. He wandered around innocently picking up different knickknacks around the room as Emma sat on the metal staircase.
"Henry." She waved her son closer and Dean tried not to look interested as he eavesdropped on the conversation. David was the last through the door and he shut it behind them as Henry walked towards his mother. "We gotta talk."
Emma took her son's hands and leaned in close, lowering her voice, but Dean could still hear clearly as she began a heartfelt apology. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry I lied to you about your dad." She paused, taking a deep breath. "I promise I will never lie to you again."
The two hugged, deeply and emotionally, a private moment that the monster hunter should not have overheard, but had. Dean set a picture frame down, trying to look inconspicuous, but with a sudden case of butter fingers, dropped it to the counter, making a loud clattering noise. Startled, Emma and Henry turned quickly, both of them setting him with a stare of epic proportions. "Um... Sorry."
With a roll of her eyes, Emma just gave a huff, then took her son's hand and the two went upstairs. Continuing to look at their belongings, Dean went to the other side of the room near the kitchen as David and Mary Margaret settled in the bedroom.
"Ready to tell me what's going on?" Dean overheard David ask. Then they lowered their voices; the room was just a curtained off side of the open floor plan, but he couldn't see them, and only barely hear them from next to the kitchen. As quietly as he could, he made his way a little closer to hear a little better.
"David... last week, I went to Regina's house and confronted her."
"Are you-" David started loudly, then lowered his voice again. "Are you out of your mind?"
"You promised not to get mad."
"I'm not mad."
Dean could hear the sarcasm in her voice as she snapped back, "I can see that."
"She could have killed you."
"I know. That's why I went... So she would kill me."
"What?" Yeah, ditto. Why the hell would tiny bombshell mom want the mean ol' queen to off her?
"I couldn't take the guilt over what I did to Cora. I could barely breathe. I told her to end it, and she ripped out my heart."
Yikes, Dean thought, wrinkling his nose at the thought.
"And when she took it out, my heart, David... it had started to blacken because of what I did."
Wait... Like, literally?
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because telling you makes things real, and I needed to believe it wasn't, that I could find a way to stop it, that redemption was possible."
"It is. Look at August."
No thanks. Still creepy.
