I sit in my bed propped up staring at my phone. Yes. That is the only thing I do.
I hear a sudden outburst in voices outside the door. I'm light on my feet when I get up, and tip toe to the area that decided James's and Bill's room with the other room that's not mine. I stop and loom in the shadows watching what was going on.
No. It isn't creepy."Oh my GOD." Amy exclaimed with a slightly hushed tone. "You're like they said. An unloyal bastard. You little son of a-"
"Like who said?" A harsh whisper cut her off.
"EVERYONE." Amy whispers back with exasperation.I hear a slight grunt of anger, "well if that's what they think of me, they're wrong."
"NO THEY AREN'T." Amy's whisper yelling, now. I can see tears running down her cheeks, and I can make out who the guy is. It's James. Duh. "They're right." Amy continues, her voice cracking, "you suck."James itches the back of his neck, "that's not what I meant." He mumbles.
"Then what did you mean?" Amy asks, crying, "that you got what you wanted, and now you're done? I thought you loved me."
"I did!" James mumbles, "er, I do... I dunno... You're super clingy..."
"CLINGY?" Amy practically yells before shutting herself up, "clingy? I'M clingy? It's not called being clingy, it's called being a good person. Something you know nothing about."I sneak back and sit against the wall near the door, also known as the room I sleep in.
"Fine." I hear James say, angrily, "you want me to say it? It's over."
"Okay." Amy cries, "go back to the stupid new girl."
WELL EXCUSE ME.
"She isn't stupid." James mumbles.
"WELL." I hear Amy turn on her heels and foot steps coming towards me.I watch as James enters the room and walks to the door. He stops when he sees me, "you heard that?"
I nod slightly.
"Hm. I'm gonna go walk around." James huffs, "I need air." He starts opening the door.
"Are you okay?" I ask quietly.
James turn back and looks down at me. He flashes a small sad grin and nods, "just dandy."
Then he walked out.Does he need to be alone? Or does he need to talk to someone? I'm about to stand up when Amy walks out. She instantly sees me and scoffs.
Uh oh.
Amy walks over and squats right in front of me, so we're inches apart.
"Don't ever think you're better than me." She sneers, "Because you're not. And you never will be."
"Jeez." I say, holding my hands up in fake surrender, "what did I ever do to get on your bad side?"Amy narrows her eyes, "James might like you more. And don't you ever think it's because you're better than I am."
I tilt my head innocently, "whatever are you taking about?" White Christmas anyone? No? Ok.
"I know you heard." Amy sneers again, "now stop acting dumb. I know you can't even afford a public school, but you've got to have some education."I slightly furrow my eyebrows, "and I'm guessing prep schools are too cheap for you? Okay. I get it. You're mad you and your beloved boyfriend broke up, but... Maybe it was for the better."
"What's the better?" Amy asks, angrily, "that you get to date him? Because he'll use you, too. You're nothing special."
"I know." I say with a shrug.
"Then stop acting like it, redhead.""Redhead?" I repeat, "that's the best you've got?"
Amy stands up and kicks me in the stomach. I grunt and grab it as she turns on her heels and walks away.I hold back tears as I stand up painfully. Yeah. I think, I know I'm poor. But I don't care. Wealth doesn't define us.
I open the door and walk out, closing it quietly behind me. I set off walking down the long open at one end corridor. I eventually realize I should stop, or I'd get lost, and lean on the railing, looking down at the pool.
