Brook-Marie Collins. She had grown up in a broken house. Parents were always fighting, her brother was never around for her, and she lived in the rough patch of the city. She was only 15, and she had already experienced more than most 30-year-olds had.
She had her leather jacket on, the one with the nutella stain on it. She had earbuds in, sitting on the cold bench by the park as she wrote in her notebook. Thoughts of where she would go when she turned 18. She wasn't going to college. That was too easy- too safe. Brook-Marie craved safety, but that's not what life demanded of her.
It was September. She would start school in 2 days, and her parents probably wouldn't be sober for her first day. Her brother would be off, doing who knows what.
"A cold life." She mumbled. It would be all she could ever know. She could never know love. She knew it. Brook-Marie wasn't going to let anyone in her chamber- her closed, locked, dark, mind. She glanced up from her notebook, seeing Stephen sitting on the bench across the park, with earbuds in and a notebook open. She wanted to talk to him- he had different life circumstances, but he was exactly like her. She craved having a friend; she craved that security.
Stephen glanced up, and they locked eyes before he slammed his notebook shut and stood up to leave. Brook-Marie's eyes were starting to tear up. All she wanted was someone to help her. She was all alone, and nobody could help her.
Not after knowing what she had been through, which is so much more than you could possibly know.
