“What do you mean ‘he’s grounded’?” Mom asked, looking worriedly at me. The week had passed so he and my dad had returned from their trip north.

“Maybe either he or my brother can explain it to you,” Kale said bitterly, looking at me as well.

I cringed, looking away from the two of them. My dad looked pointedly at Basil, making my cousin gulp. I stepped towards my mom and slipped my fingers around his wrist, tugging gently on his arm. “Can I talk to you in private?” I asked.

He nodded, letting me lead him through the house and out to the back porch. We sat on the chairs leaned up against the house and Mom adjusted his position, turning to face me. “Now, what’s going on?”

~~~*~~~
Mom leaned back against his hair and sighed, running his hand through his hair. He didn’t say anything, he simply took my hand in his and helped me up, taking me back inside.
I chewed the inside of my cheek, not ready to face my dad.
“You’re not in trouble,” Mom assured me. “And you’re not grounded.”
My shoulders fell as I relaxed, a small smile growing on my face. My mother was the best wolf I’d ever met.
He approached my dad, hugging his waist gently. Mom whispered something into Dad’s ear and he nodded, guiding him to their room.
“How did it go?” Basil asked, moving to stand next to me and I let out a shaky sigh.
“Don’t go near him,” Kale growled at his brother. “He may not be in trouble, but you still are.”
Basil stepped back and smiled apologetically at me. “Sorry,” he said.
Kale rolled his eyes. “No, you’re not,” he muttered bitterly.
“I am,” Basil retorted stepping back towards me and hugging my waist. “See? Marble doesn’t mind it when I hug him like this.” He bent down, resting his chin on my shoulder, and whispered in my ear. “Play along.”
I smiled softly at him, bringing my hand up to softly pat his head. “I don’t mind,” I agreed.
Kale’s eyes narrowed as he stepped forward, grabbing the hand that rested on his brothers head and wrenched me away from Basil, causing me to stumble forward and land with a thud against his chest. My cousin wrapped a protective arm around my waist and glared at his brother
My face warmed when Kale’s arms didn’t move. He was holding me – actually holding me. I smiled, turning to press my face against Kale’s chest.
He hugged me tighter, leaning down to touching his face to the top of my head. “Don’t let him touch you,” he whispered, barely audible.
“I thought you hated me,” I mumbled into the fabric of his hoodie.
Kale chuckled lowly. “Never,” he whispered.
The room was silent for a moment before I tilted my head up. “Kale,” I asked.
“Hm?”
“I like you,” I said, smiling up at him.
He laughed and ruffled my hair. “I like you too.”
I shook my head. “That’s not what I meant.” I turned to Basil for some help in explaining, but my other cousing had left, leaving Kale and I alone. I faced Kale again. “I –I think I’m in love with you.” I stuttered.
Kale’s eyebrows knitted together. “Oh,” he sighed.
Oh?
