Chapter 1

"Welcome to another year at South Pacific High School!" Principal Drew's voice rang out through the loudspeaker as students rushed through the crowded hallway's not listening a bit. "We hope that this year is even better than our last!"

"We hope that this year is even better than our last!" Louis mimicked beside me, making Niall and I chuckle. "Yeah this year will be fucking great, because we're finally seniors, right Haz?"

"Last year in this hell hole." I agreed as we three walked down the hall, hardly glancing at anyone we passed.

"Doesn't matter though, really. Even after graduation we'll still be stuck in this town doing all of Mark's grunt work." Niall mumbled, saying exactly the thing I tried to block from my thoughts.

"Fuck that. I'm not staying here and doing that for the rest of my life." I replied making Louis and Niall's heads turn to look at me.

"Haz don't talk like that. You know what Mark would do to you, to us, if you tried to leave. This is who we are. We can't just leave." Louis said. I sighed. He was right. I couldn't get thirty miles out of this town before Mark or one of his guys caught me.

And once they caught me, I'd be in a living hell. They'd have me on my knees begging for death.

"Have you even started doing deliveries yet?" Niall asked. I shook my head.

"No, you know I don't do that shit." I replied.

"No just everything else." Louis laughed. I shrugged, unashamed.

"Gotta make a living somehow." I said, Niall and Louis nodding. They, along with Zayn and Liam, started doing deliveries of Mark's 'product' last year. I was the only one who refused, and Mark didn't press the issue to much considering I had only been 17 at the time and he had plenty of other guys to do it. I just stuck with collecting money and all that other stuff. But now I was 18 and I knew he would ask me again.

But I tried to not think about that.

My dad had worked for Mark ten years ago, when he was still alive. He died when I was eight. So I basically grew up knowing Mark, my whole life. If I worked for him, I got his protection for my mom, for my brothers, and for me.

And if I didn't work for him, well we don't really talk about what would happen then.

"Where's Zayn and Liam?" Niall asked.

"They were picking up some cigs, I think." Louis mumbled, his gaze falling on a busty brunette who he'd already hooked up with a number of times. He ran a hand through his hair, glancing up and down her body.

Like most girls in this school, she was hot. But that was all there was to her, her looks.

"Alana sure got fitter over the summer, didn't she?" Louis asked Niall and I. I shrugged. She still looked the same to me, fit yes, but no different than any other girl.

"You already hit that, Lou." Niall cackled. "Don't go back for seconds."

"More like fifths." I laughed making Louis glare at Niall and I.

"Hey Harry." A giggling blonde, who's name I couldn't remember, waved to me as she passed. I gave her a nod and a smile making her smile widen, and her right eye drop into a wink.

"Fuck, man." Louis said exasperated once the blonde was out of earshot. "I don't get you. You could have her in a second but you choose not too."

"I did have her." I shrugged, trying to remember her name for the life of me. "We hooked up like last summer or something. Wasn't that great." I said, vaguely remembering a drunken night at a party.
