I ran up the rusty iron stairs, as I went my arm struck a disjointed railing, catching my shoulder and raising blood. I clenched my jaw, ignoring the bolt of pain, and continued. Sparks shot out from four of the cables on the walls around me, burning at my fingers, which were wrapped tightly around the metal banister. I hurled myself up the last few steps, and staggered out into the open. The sky had grown dark, and spears of rain fell down on me. I shook my head, flicking my soaking wet hair from my face, and stumbled forward, feeling sick with fear.  I threw myself forward, gripping on tightly to the metal raillings, and looked over the side of block A.

And then I saw them.

Hundreds. Hundreds of them, all gathered around the compound, Throwing their bodies against the fences, clawing and  tearing at the metal links. I brought a shaking hand to my mouth, staggering back.

It couldn't be. Where were the border patrol?

I patted my belt, and my searching fingers came to rest on my binoculars. I wrenched them from the pocket and raised them to my face, and looked over at the forest surrounding the compound. My heart, was pounding in my chest, and my stomach took a sickening lurch. Sure enough, hordes of the infected were pouring from between the trees, staggering and falling to the ground, attacking each other, and joining the attack on the compound. I lowered the binoculars.

The fences would give way soon. There was too many of them. It was no longer a matter of if, but when, and how long we had left. And by the looks of it, we didn't have long  at all.  The sirens roared in my ears, but were unable to cloak the clanging of the metal fences, which were being rocked violently back and forth by thousands of decaying hands.

To begin with, they had been silent, staring in with empty, blood filmed eyes.  As if they were calculating, plotting. But how? they didn't even have the ability to do such things, it was completely preposterous!

The interior guard had been instructed not to shoot at this point, due to fear that the sudden sound of a shot  could awake them. In actuall fact, there didn't even need to be a trigger.

The attack it's self had come out of the blue. One minute there was dead silence, then next they had come to life. Now,  they were battering at the fences and howling like deranged animals.

The compound had been on lock down for the past half hour. This should've been the safest place in the case of a horde attack, but the age and the wear and tear to the government testing facility meant that it was less stable and safe than we could've imagined. The safest places in the whole of the compound to be in would be where I was currently, Block A. And the place where most of the people were located was the less technologically advanced part. Which was a completely separate building. The main building, which I was in, was 'L' shaped, the unsafe and unstable building resting inside the L. Block B.

and if the infected broke through the fences, which they inevitably would, being locked in which ever sector of the compound you were in at the time made you little more than tinned meat to the infected. We had known all along it wouldn't do particularly well against so many of them, but then, we hadn't expected so many of them.

When we had found the compound, we were initially looking for a cure. I' d hazard a guess that they had begun searching for one the minute the virus had begun. The minute people had been exposed. At that point, there was no rush. Because the virus remained dormant in the body for some time. The government obviously overestimated how long they had, and how quickly things would spiral out of control. Nobody would've known what hit them. Except for the scientists and government and whoever else knew the true devastating effect that would result from the incident. As I was saying, we were looking for a cure as this compound, a government testing lab, was where the cure-searching had taken place. We had no luck; the place had been completely emptied.
