Chapter 1

I've always lived here. I was born here, grew up here (although I'm only 13), and I still live here. I've never been to any other place, and I don't think I'm going to.

'Where is this place that I talk of?' You ask. We'll let me tell you. From the beginning.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Long ago, there was a place called the Village of Endless Mountain. Anywhere in the village there was green grass and rare plants and beautiful flowers. Anywhere you where in the village, you could look up and see the huge, tall endless mountain. It stretched on for thousands of miles, and it was so tall that the tip touched the moon.

One day, a family arrived at the Village of Endless Mountain. There was two obedient suns, their father, and their mother. The mother was wise, the suns where obedient, but the father was a fool. His wife and sons feared him, for he was big and strong. So they did whatever he wanted them to do, to keep him from being angered.

About a week after they moved in, on a bright, early moring, the father burst out of his room and yelled, "SOMETHING IS BLOCKING MY VIEW!! I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS BLOCKING THE LIGHT TO COME IN AND FOR ME TO BE ABLE TO SEE OUT MY WINDOW!!"

The sons hurried to their room, and pretending to be asleep, to avoid their father's tantrum.

Meanwhile, their mother tried to calm him down by saying" It is the mountain, my dear. There is a huge, never ending mountain, and it is in front of your window."

"THEN WE SHAL MOVE THIS MOUNTAIN OF ANOYANCE!!!!" He roared, and stormed off to the store room. When he came back, he had gathered shovels and pails, and he burst into his sons' room and told them to get out of bed.

He forced his sons and wife to dig the mountain. Everyday, his sons and even his wife dogged up more of the mountain.

The Spirit of The Mountain was full of anger, for he had helped the people of the village, yet they wanted to get rid of them.

He hurried off, never turning back to the Village of Endless Mountain, leaving a huge land of stone, called The Stone Pancake, where the mountain once was.

When the man found out that the mountain was gone, he said it was a "Clear Sky."

Ever since, the village has been known as the Village of Clear Sky.

---------------------------------

Well, that's it. That's the story of my boring, dull home. After the mountain vanished, plants stopped growing. We had little rain, and the moon disapeared.

But I have realized that out sky was not clear, but empty. And so was our village. Every year, more and more people leave, leaving only the remains of their houses and even less people in our poor, dry, hot village.

I've always longed to leave, but there are some things that are in my way.

First of all, I don't know where I'd go. I don't know the path to anywhere, and I might get lost. The only thing I've thought of is that I can hide in a cart / wagon if a traveler or trader came by, but the only visitor we've had lately is a lady that came here walking and has stayed quite a while.

The other reason is that my mother would never allow it. She is the main reason I can't go anywhere.

Anyways, I don't think I've introduced myself quite yet.

As you know, I live in the Village of Clear Sky.

I live in a house with 4 rooms, which might seem like a lot but if you consider how much people are in my family.

I live with mother and all my siblings. You might be wondering, 'what about your dad?' Here's a clue: my father and mother did NOT divorce.

Actually, my father died of some illness when I was 4. That's the main reason my mother is so protective of me.

I have an older sister, Kim, who's 2 years older than me. Then there's me. Then came quadruplets, (yes, it's like twins, only 4 instead of 2, and yes, that really happened) Herb, Dara, Mark, and Lily are the quadruplets. Then came Maria, then Marrisa.

So this is how it went:

First was Kim (now 15)

2 years later, me (now 13)

1 year later, Herb, Dara, Mark, and Lily, the quadruplets.(all of them are now 12)

1 year after that came Maria.(now 11)

Then finally, one year later, came Marisa.(now 10)

So ya, we are a pretty big family.

You might be wondering what my name is. Well my name is Rose. My real name is really Roset, but I just go by Rose and nobody (except for Kim and Mother) know my real name. And they haven't told anyone. Mother used to tell me story's of how I would make our village bloom again when I was little. I used to actually believe that. But I know that NOTHING can make our village how it used to be.

In our village, and in many villages, your name is your destiny. Kim was kind, and was a really good cook. Herb was a good farmer and loved vegetables, because of his name of course. Dara was brave and adventurous, Mark was always getting in trouble and was mean, Lily loved swimming and was pretty, Maria was sweet and kind and liked helping others, and Marisa loved melons for some reason and loved being outdoors.

As for me, Rose, I always saw beauty in everything. At least that's what everyone said. I was very quiet, and did as I was told. I was organized, and smart. I would be good in school if we had school in our town, but we don't. Sometimes, Mrs. Addison, a widow in our village, invited all the children in the village to her class for a small lesson. But I could figure stuff out on my own.

I was pretty smart, even though I kept most things to myself. I had no friends, and when all the other village children went out to play with each other, I just sat inside watching them, doing something else.

I never knew what my name really ment, or what my destiny was, but I never knew that I was about to find out.
