“SARAH!” I watched her fall, tumble like a ragdoll. Her face was contorted in pain, and I watched her eyes lock onto mine for a millisecond. That second was all it took. I bounded down the stairs as her head hit the floor with a colossal crack. Panic flooded through me in waves. There was a murmuring as classroom doors began to snap open. I reached for Sarah's hand. Her fingers were icy cold, and her wedding ring cut into my palm.
“DON’T TOUCH HER!” Mr Locke burst from his office and skidded to a halt, paling at the sight of his wife piled in a heap at the bottom of the stairs. “Don’t just stand there, call an ambulance!” He was visibly in shock, and I shooted backwards, as Mr Locke collapsed to his knees next to me.
I fumbled for my phone.
“Emergency – which service do you require?” A bright brisk voice answered.
“A-ambulance.” I could barely get my words out. “My teacher, sh-she’s fallen down the stairs.”
