"Mom?" I stammer.
I rush to the door and let her in, nearly falling over because of the drug effects. She runs inside and slams the door, locking it with both locks. She then grabs my hand and drags me to the basement. After I rush down the stairs I look up at her. She comes down and grabs a gun.
"Mom? What's going on?" I ask.
"Dustin is home..." is all she says.
"So?" I ask, more confused than before.
"Maya, listen to me, he is dangerous, we need to run." she grabs my hand.
"I-I can't!!" I shout. "I thought I saw someone in the window so I took my pills!"
"Shit." she curses. "Okay, honey? You need to hide down here. Don't make a sound. Do you have your knife?" I nod. "Good, find a spot and stay safe."
I hug her tightly. "I love you mom." a tear rushes down my face.
"I love you too." she whispers.
She then kisses my forehead and runs upstairs. She shuts the door as I find a place in the corner. I am tucked in between a washer and drier. I'll be fine if he doesn't search that hard. Suddenly I hear a gun go off. Then a scream. "Mom..." I whisper.
Then the sound footsteps get more and more near the basement door. I hear it open. My heart beats so loud I'm surprised it didn't echo. Heavy footsteps cautiously walk down the stairs. It walks over to my first thought hiding spot. The pantry. Yes! I cheer. I knew it was too obvious. He will find me if I don't go now. I jump out of my spot and race up the stairs. I grew up in this home, so I knew just the spots to step to avoid the creaks. Just as I get to the top, I realize my cell was still downstairs. Why didn't I use it???
I bolted through the front door, my head spinning from drowsiness, and I ran to the last place I wanted to be. Dustin's house. Besides Dustin, our nearest neighbor was a half mile down the road. I know Dustin would be out by then. I stumbled to his garage door and opened it enough just to slip myself through. Once I was in, I turned around and nearly dropped dead.
