I don't want to tell her. It will take away all of her options. She is just starting to live her life. She doesn't need to know that her life belongs to me.
"There's some things you need to know Nessie."
I can't read her expression. It's a mix of fear, confusion, and worry. One thing that bothers me about her is that she's always a closed book. She has tears in her eyes. I want to start crying too, but I know that will only make her cry more. I lean over and wipe the tears off her face.
"Sweetie, don't cry. You know I hate it when you do that."
"It's not really something I can control," she says quietly. She's got her head down, looking at her feet. I lift her tear streaked face up so she will look at me. She touches my cheek and a flood of images go flashing through my mind. They are all of us. Our sleepovers, our hunts, our talks, our piggy back rides. All good memories. I realize that she thinks it is all about to end, when really, it hasn't even started.
"Jake, I'm scared." She says this like she's embarassed to admit it. Like if she admits it, she'll come across as weak.
"Why are you scared?," I ask her.
"I don't want to know what you're gonna say."
"What do you think I'm gonna say?" What does she think I'm gonna say?
"That you can't spend time with me anymore." WHAT?!?!
"Why would you think that?"
"Man, you ask a lot of questions. I think that because I'm too young and immature for you to be around."
"And this is coming from the girl who earlier was trying to convince me how mature she is?"
She gave me a cutting glare. "Trust me, that's not what I was gonna say." "Actually, just the oppiste," I say under my breath.
She turns with a curious look in her eyes. "Ok, if it's not that, then I have no idea. What is it?"
"Ok Ness, I guess it's time I spilled the beans."
"Will you please stop with the code crap and just get to the point?" She sounds so much like Bella to me at that moment.
"Do you remember what imprinting means?"
"Of course. It's like when you see her and she's what ties you to the Earth. Like with Sam and Emily."
Good, she's getting the picture. "Yeah, and Paul and Rebecca, Jared and Kim, and Quil and Claire."
"Yeah, the Quil and Claire thing still kind of creeps me out."
Oh, great. She thinks that is weird so she's gonna be thrilled to find out about us.
She continues on. "What about it? Did someone else in the pack imprint? Was it Seth?," she asks.
"No, not Seth."
"Embry?"
"Not Embry."
She wracks her brain for a moment. "Was it you? Is that why this is so important?" She has this strange look on her face. Like she is upset.
This is the hard part. "Yeah, it was me."
"Oh." She doesn't say anything for a few seconds. She just looks down.
She is still looking at the ground when she speaks. "Is it Leah?"
"What?! No! Of course not! Why was that your guess?"
"Just a feeling. I mean, doesn't Billy think you imprint to create stronger wolves? And you both have the wolf gene so your child would most likely carry on the line. Plus, you guys are always arguing, but you seem like friends. You know what they say, there's a fine line between love and hate."
"Well our line is more hate. She gets on my nerves."
"And I'm sure you get on hers. There's still the stronger wolf thing." She's trying to make this seem logical, when really it's insane.
"That's just my dad's theory. Nothing more. It's not a fact."
It kind of disgusts me that anyone would think I would imprint on Leah. Besides, I don't even know if werewolves can imprint on other members of their pack. Seems like it would be too weird with the whole being able to read each other's mind thing."
"It's not Leah. Trust me."
"Then who? Do I know her?"
"You know her." Oh, you definitely know her.
She just sits there.
"You remember me talking to you about Quil and Claire? How even though she's only six, he'll wait for her to grow up, and once she gets to be his age, he'll start aging again?"
"Yeah. He's got a long time to wait."
"But he'll do it because he loves her. He doesn't think about her like that, but acts as her big brother, a protector."
"You already told me all of this." I could see she was getting annoyed.
I don't know how I'm gonna be able to get the words out of my mouth. "I'm restating it because you need to know that the girl I imprinted on is you."
*****
She didn't speak, maybe from shock. She looked as if she were searching for the right words to say, but every time she started to speak, she thought better of it and closed her mouth again. Finally I couldn't take it anymore.
"Aren't you going to say something?"
"I don't know what to say. You can't be serious."
"Of course I'm serious. Why do you look so upset."
"I'm upset because... I mean why didn't anyone tell me this before? Did you guys not think I had a right to know? Does everyone know about this but me? Oh my gosh, I can't believe this."
"I'm sorry ok. I'll answer all of your questions. I didn't want to tell you because I thought that it would make you feel as if you had no other options. No one likes having their options taken away from them. And of course you had a right to know, I was just waiting until you got to where you could really understand it. Everyone knows but they wanted me to wait until you were fully grown to tell you. I'm not supposed to be talking to you about this. I just couldn't wait any more. Because it's hard for me, when you're getting older, to not want to be with you in a romantic way."
She just stares at me, like she's puzzled. "So, my parents are worried that if I know, that it will make me want to be with you... like that?"
"Yeah..."
"So you didn't want to tell me because you thought that I would want to be with other guys?"
"Well... yeah. I mean, you're gorgeous. You could have any guy in the world that you want. You just haven't been able to really meet anybody you like because of the whole waiting for you to go to school until you're fully grown thing."
"But Jacob... I already love you. Why would I need to go out and meet somebody and eventually fall in love? You're perfect."
"Please, I'm far from perfect. But I'll take it anyway."
She looks around. "So... what do we do now?," she asks.
"I'm not really sure. I haven't thought that far ahead. But for right now, I've gotta get you back before anyone starts worrying."
It took us a little while longer to get back since I wasn't speeding this time. We didn't say much on the ride. But this time it wasn't from anger, just pure awkwardness. When we pulled up I saw Edward standing on the front porch, looking out at the driveway. I got out of the car and walked towards the house.
I heard him speak. "Jacob, what have you done?"
