"Scalpel please."
The head surgeon orders as we perform a heart surgery on a patient, a coronary artery bypass surgery which restores the blood flow to the heart muscle by placing a blood vessel from another part of the body to 'bypass' the blockage.
An intense atmosphere fills the operating room as the whole team becomes attentive, quick and alert. Since this is my first time to assist in a heart surgery, it made me anxious that I prayed countless times starting when the surgery was announced until the last few seconds before the procedure started.
The surgery was very intense and long - it lasted for around 3-5 hours. Operating the heart is a very delicate procedure and it needed precise movements.
It's hard to mend a broken heart.
But with the help of time and the people around you, it heals.
The surgery was a success after the head surgeon announced that final stitches would be made. I let out a heavy sigh, everyone did, being thankful that the procedure turned out to be a success. We saved someone's life.
"Good job, everyone." The head surgeon declared as we all gathered in the dressing room to change. I was about to go to my locker when the head surgeon approached me, "Irene, you exhibited a great performance earlier. You're really bound to become a surgeon in the future." I let out a shy smile, "Thank you, Doctor Cruz. I really hope to pass the examination next month."
I am doctor on residency training. I still have no specialty but I already have one in mind; cardiothoracic surgery which involves giving surgical treatment to organs inside the chest, including the heart.
"Irene! We're going to a coffee shop nearby. Do you want to come with us?" Celine, my co-trainee offered.
At first, I was hesitant since I just wanted to be alone and to rest but at the same time, I didn't want to miss a moment with them. My co-trainees are so fun to be with. Despite of the difficulties and hardships we encounter everyday just to reach our dreams, being with them eliminates all of those problems.
"C'mon, I! Reward yourself after a successful surgery!" Mark snapped me out from my thoughts. He's right, I should reward myself after that nerve-wrecking surgery."
It was night time but it was still hot and humid. I suddenly remembered the moments where I would walk in the streets of Seoul at night. The cold breeze is just perfect enough to grab some coffee inside their cute coffee shops.

"This day is so~ tiring!" Rose, who was one of the assistants earlier, exclaimed as soon as we sat on the couch inside the coffee shop. I heaved a sigh too. This day indeed was a very tiring. The shop was so cold that it made me want to sleep right on the spot! "I was too nervous earlier that I almost dropped the scalpel when Doctor Cruz asked for it!" Rose continued even though almost all of us weren't paying attention anymore because we were just basically tired.
"Hey, Doctor Gil talked to me earlier after the surgery." Enrique started. All eyes were on him while we were sipping our coffees and smoothies.
"What about it?" asked Celine.
"Well, he just asked if we wanted to volunteer for something. A certain entertainment agency abroad asked volunteers from our hospital for a concert next month." Enrique replied.
"Volunteer work? I guess that sounds fun." I joined in. We all eyed each other with, getting excited at the thought of being the stand-by medical crew for a concert.
Concerts! Does that mean we can watch the concert for free? Hey Irene, you're there to work. You need to check up on the fans than the artists!
"By the way, whose concert is that?" Mark asked.
"They're just a Korean boy group... EXO."
My fellow female trainees squealed in excitement. I, on the other hand...
Oh, him.
