Mariah slammed the door to her bedroom shut, trying not to let the hot tears welling up in her eyes spill over. It had been a day since the Reynolds pamphlet had been released, and already people were calling her names in the streets. Whore. Filthy Cheat. She narrowly escaped being beaten up several times.
Her husband hated her too.
"You have ruined my reputation!! How could you let him do this?!" He had roared at her a few hours ago, waving a copy of the pamphlet in her face. He began to hit her with it, the paper making small cuts on her face.
" I expect you gone by dawn tomorrow. Pack up your things and leave." He had said coldly. She had gone upstairs to gather her belongings...and so she could cry in peace.
She locked the door, and leaned against it, afraid of her husband coming in, afraid of his rage. She allowed a tear to fall, the droplet tracing down her cheek. She began to whisper to herself softly.
"T-there was a time when men were kind," she felt more tears drip down her face.
"When their voices were s-soft, and their words inviting..." She slid down the rough doorframe slowly until she was sitting on the floor.
"There was a time when love was blind,
and the world was a song,
and the song was e-exciting..." Her voice broke on the word 'exciting'. Tears were now spilling freely down her face.
"There was a time... t-then it all went wrong..."
A flood of memories overcame her.
"I dreamed a dream in time gone by...
when hope was high,
and life worth l-living..."
Her whisper became louder as she thought of when she was a young girl.
"I d-dreamed that love would never die... I dreamed that God would be forgiving..."
She began to vividly remember meeting James for the first time.
"Then I was young and unafraid," she recalled to herself
"And dreams were made and used and wasted..."
She thought of recently, when James made her sell herself to Alexander for his own gain.
"There was no ransom to be paid..."
She thought again of their wedding.
"No song unsung, no wine untasted..."
She rocked back and forth on the floor, holding her head in her hands as she cried quietly.
"But the tigers come at night..."
The abuse. The horrible abuse. Every day, every night James would hit her if she did the slightest thing wrong.
"With their voices soft as thunder..." He would yell at her, telling her she was worthless, useless.
"As they tear your hope apart...
as they turn your dream to shame..." Her voice rose on the final word...
She suddenly thought of Alexander.
"He slept a summer by my side...
he filled my days with endless wonder..."
She shivered with another silent flood of tears.
"He took my childhood in his stride!"
she wailed.
"But he was gone when autumn came..."
Oh how she missed Alexander. Her only love. Her only light in a life so dark.
"And still I dream he'll come to me, that we will live the years together..
but there are dreams that cannot be!" she was sobbing freely now
"And there are storms we cannot weather!"
She cried.
"I had a dream my life would be
so different from this hell I'm living!" she wailed angrily, silently cursing James, cursing Alexander, cursing life and how cruel it was.
"So different now from what it seemed..."
Her voice dropped to a whisper again.
"Now life has k-killed..." she choked out
"The dream I dreamed..."
