Not you

"Are you okay?" Everett's voice caused my head to snap up.

"Yeah, I'm fine." I clenched my hand into a fist, trapping the piece of paper inside.

"Then why do you look like you're about to faint or start screaming?"

Because out of all the topic there were to choose from, I had to draw water.

"I don't." I cut him off. "What do you have?" I glanced at his word over his shoulder.

"Music." He scrunched up his nose. "Will have to get creative about this one. You?"

I mentally punched myself for not taking the other piece of paper before answering.

"Water."

Everett threw his head back and groaned.

"Well that's just not fair." He complained. "Your theme is so much better!"

Yeah, right.

"We could switch it." I proposed, hope sparkling in me.

"No way." He shook his head with a resigned look. "I've just registered."

Damn.

"You'll think of something." I assured him, trying to not look as shitty as I felt. "Do you have any idea about whom are you going to photograph?"

"Well, my sister plays probably every existing instrument. Maybe I'll ask her. Do you?"

I shook my head.

"Nope. No hot lifeguards waiting for me at home."

He puckered his lips.

"If I wasn't taking part myself, I would become your sexy lifeguard." He said. "But I don't think they would let me be both a photographer and a model. Sorry."

"That's okay." I smiled lightly. "I'll just have to look for someone."

"Give me your number and when I find someone, I'll let you know."

Well, wasn't it just great to make new friends? Everett and I exchanged phone numbers before he declared he had to go drive his sister somewhere. When he left, I became the only person in the room.

"Do you have a question?" Cassandra asked, seeing me still standing in the same spot.

"Actually, I do." I walked over to her. "Is there any possibility of... changing my word? Not switching it with anybody but just getting a new one?"

"I'm afraid not." She sent me an apologetic smile. "Why? You don't like yours?"

"I don't think it's... suitable for me." I explained.

She pursed her lips but didn't relent.

"I'm sure you'll think of something." She said, placing a palm on my shoulder.

I nodded and thanked her before turning away and leaving.

On the way back, I cursed myself over and over for drawing this stupid word. There were two pieces of paper. I had fifty percent of chances of drawing music. But of course, fate had other plans for me.

I sighed in exasperation, resting my head on my hands. Fucking karma.

Back at the apartment, I found Abi and Dom still in the same spot on the couch. The moment I stepped in, Abi's head snapped up and she smiled brightly. I did my best to ignore the way her hair stuck out in all directions and how her lips looked a little bit too swollen.

"How did it go?" She asked as I set my bag down on the kitchen counter.

"It was fantastic. I watched a fascinating presentation and have a new bisexual friend named Everett." I said cheerfully, grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge.
