Emma Long

Ethan followed behind mom and I followed him, knives raised.

We made our way back to the door we came in but before my mom could open it, 3 biters noticed us and began to bang on it.

"Go- go back!" My mom shouted to us.

She turned around desperately looking for another exit.

Biters heard her yell and began to press their grimy fingers on the windows.

I could feel my heart rate growing faster and faster as more biters noticed us. We had to find a way out, it was now or we die in here. I can't let that happen.

I looked past the living room and spotted a hallway with a door to the outside at the end. It was free from biters.

"Back there!" I shouted over the herd of biters beginning to surround the house. I pointed to the door and began to run towards it.

When I turned around I saw my mother holding Ethan's hand pulling him to the door. Her other hand firmly holding onto her pistol while her bag was constantly sliding down her arm.

I pulled it open quickly with my free hand and waited for mom and Ethan to get outside. I followed them outside pulling my beretta out from its holster attached to my thigh. I shot a few biters in the head, making them drop dead with red liquid seeping out of their skull.

The biters were blocking every way we could take to get back to the boat.

My mom was standing outside waiting for me. She was shooting the biters that were closest while holding Ethan behind her. His bright blue eyes were filled with fear and he was shaking rapidly while holding his pocket knife close to his chest.

I sprinted towards them holding my knife in my left hand and my gun in the other. The duffel bag bouncing on my shoulder.

"Run to the woods!" She screamed to me once I caught up with them.

We began to run. We ran for our lives. I turned around to shoot the nearest biter but as I did I watched as Ethan's feet get caught on a root from a tree and he was forcefully pulled to the ground. As mom bent down to lift him up a biter grabbed a hold of her shoe and bit down on her ankle. Everything began to slow down, as if the world were in slow motion. She screamed in agony as she tried to kick it away but it pulled her to the ground, allowing more biters to feast on her flesh. I watched in horror as my mother was devoured by monsters. I wanted to do something but I was frozen. The woman who raised me and kept me safe this whole time was now dying right in front of me. Tears filled my eyes and I wanted to just sit down and cry. I snapped back into reality as I saw a biter notice my brother who was sitting on the ground crying, frozen in shock as he watched our mom die in such a cruel way.

I raised my gun and shot the walker coming for my brother in the head.

I wiped away the tears and slid my knife in my belt.

I ran to my brother and scooped him up in my arms and began to run.

As I ran I heard my mothers horrifying screams end. Tears still flowing down my cheeks. Ethan sobbed into my shirt as I ran. I dodged branches as I ran pushing them away with my left hand as I hold Ethan with my right.

Night time.

We were walking for hours looking for somewhere to stay for the night. The woods seemed never ending. I held onto Ethan's hand tightly so he would stay close to me. My other hand was dragging my duffel bag. The sun set about an hour ago and now it was pitch black and I could see barely anything.

We walked into a small opening and I saw an old abandoned car. I sighed in relief as we walked to the car. I pulled out my knife and held it up. I opened the drivers seat door cringing as it made a loud creak. Alerted from the noise, a biter rose up from the seat. I let go of Ethan's hand suddenly and stabbed it in the top of its head with all the energy I had left in me. It sunk to the floor and I almost gagged as I saw the maggots crawling out of its wound.

I dragged its body out of the car and dropped it on the grass.

"Can we sleep in here? I'm tired." Ethan said, while rubbing his eyes, completely oblivious to the biter on the ground.

"Yeah." I sighed. "I'm tired too."

I opened the back door and set my duffel bag on the seat. I then closed the door back up and went to the other side of the car. I opened the passenger door and laid the seat back as much as I could.

"Alright. Come here, Ethan." I said. He walked around the car to me. "Hop in." I said motioning to the seat with my hand. He did as told and laid down on the seat and closed his eyes. I shut the door and walked back to the drivers side. I got in and laid down on the seat then closed the door quietly. I took my knife out from my belt and set it on my lap so I could grab it faster if I needed to, and left my gun in its holster.

I closed my eyes and tried to forget about what happened today, but I couldn't. I never will. I could feel tears rising but I didn't want to let them fall. I have to stay strong for him.

It was completely silent now except for the small breaths I heard, coming from Ethan.

"Goodnight Emma." He said then turned on his side and rested his head on his hands. "Goodnight Ethan" I whispered then laid a hand on his shoulder.

He's all you have left. I thought. Protect him with your life, because without him your alone and have no purpose. He is your purpose. Keep him safe.

My eyes began to feel heavier and heavier with every second that passed and soon I fell asleep from exhaustion.
