I've always wondered what life would be like outside the hood. You know, the type of lives they show on the big screen; the glitz, the glam, the fame. Hollywood makes it look so real, as if anyone can live that type of lifestyle. I'm here to tell you, it's not.
My names Brooke, it's short for Brooklyn. My mom always wanted to visit New York so she decided to name me after a New York city. She loved to sing and dance, and eventually wanted to attend Juilliard, one of the most famous performing art schools known to man. Unfortunately, her dreams were put on hold when she got pregnant in highschool with my big brother James, then soon had me. My mother always wanted a girl, but never thought she'd get one before she even made it out of high school. She's always been the smartest out of the bunch, and she made sure I don't end up making the mistakes she made. My brother on the other hand, is a different story.
James, a senior in highschool, is two grades ahead of me. We both attend Bridgeway High School, located 5 minutes outside my hometown, Bridgeway, North Carolina. Growing up in what we called South side BW, life was tough. Drugs, violence, and racial tension was all Bridgeway had to offer. Everyday I prayed for a way out, meanwhile James kept finding reasons to want to stay. He was one of the high school jocks who had no respect for women, smoked weed all the time, and always broke curfew. "J. Rebel" is what his 'friends' liked to call him.
But enough about them; let's talk about me. As you already know, my name is Brooke. I am a sophomore in high school, and is currently dating one of the hottest seniors at Bridgeway. I guess I took after my mom with the whole singing-dancing thing. It's not really my passion, but it's something I love doing when I have nothing better else to do. Now acting, on the other hand, is what I consider my Holy Grail. I love acting and writing. I soon hope to go to Spelman College where I can pursue my aspirations of majoring in journalism while also becoming the woman behind and infront of the camera. Who would think a small town girl like me, would have such big hopes and dreams? Sometimes, I even doubt myself, and whether or not i'll make it out this rotten, old town.
