FanFiction - Of Mice and Men - For the Love of Rabbits
Author's note: This is the first time I've basically copied a scene directly from the film, except I've fitted Anya in. So, let me know what you think :)
Chapter 5
The next day was a hot one. Anya woke up with sweat lines all over her clothes and bunk, as did all the other men in the bunkhouse. She climbed out of her cot and tugged her auburn hair up in a ponytail to take it off her neck and out of her face. Then, she grabbed at a pile of clothes that lay in disarray around her bunk and slid them on whilst everyone else slept. The events of last night played in her mind over and over. The strength of Lennie astounded her.
"Com'on George, you should come out and see this. Slim ain't going to to be happy Curley's accusing him of being with his wife."
"Nah, I'm ok. You go though." With that, Whit dodged out of the bunkhouse after Carlson and the others. The only ones that remained were Candy, Anya, George and Lennie who had just returned from being with his new pup and Milly in the barn. Anya and George introduced them yesterday and George said that Lennie had never looked so happy. "Was Curley's wife in the barn?" George asked as Lennie sat beside him.
"If she was, I didn't see her, George." With that, he got up and stood by the bunkhouse door, looking out towards the barn.
"Perhaps I should go and check on Slim..." Anya spoke up from her cot by Candy's. She tried to slide past George who was blocking her way, but he wouldn't budge. "Please, excuse me."
"Is that really a good idea?" She stared at him blankly until she huffed and gave in.
Perhaps not. I'm sure Slim will be fine." Anya returned to her place on her bunk, looking rather defeated.
"George... both the ends is the same. Why is both the ends the same?" George turned to look at what Lennie was speaking of and when he realised it was the playing cards on the table he sighed.
"I don't know, it's just how they make 'em. Are you sure Curley's Wife wasn't in the barn?"
"No she was never in the barn, George."
"Give me a good whore house anytime. A man can go in and do what he wants and then come out, no messes." Anya huffed slightly in irritation and this did not go unnoticed by George or Candy.
"Have you ever been to a whore house, George?" Anya spoke with fake interest and distaste. He didn't answer, only looked down at his feet. That's when she realised he hadn't.
"George... How long is it gonna be befor' we get the 'ittle place, and live off the fatta the land?" Now Anya was listening with some interest, as was Candy she noticed.
"We gotta get some money together first. I know a little place we can get cheap, but they ain't givin' it away."
"Tell about that place, George." He smiled at Lennie and began this wonderous description of the little place.
"It's ten acres, It's got a windmill and it's got a little shack on it and a chicken run."
"And rabbits, George?"
"Well, I could easily build a few hutches and you could feed them."
With this said, Lennie started getting extremely excited at the prospect. "You damn righ- You god damn right I could. But George... tell about th- tell about the house, George." Now as George continued to speak, he made his way over to Lennie to sit at the table beside him.
