Once there was a boy. For Christmas, the seven year old begged his parents for a puppy. His wish was granted, seeing as the boy was an only child and his parents wanted him to be constantly happy, and to have some one to play with. His parents bought the puppy from a local animal adoption center. The dog was a young, hyper puppy- a golden retriever. It was one of the smallest, fluffiest things you could imagine, and the boy loved it with all of his heart.

He spent all of his free time with the dog, which was named Felix by his parents, seeing as it brought the greatest amount of joy and happiness to their normally bored child who took a lot of effort to entertain. The boy didn't have many friends, which he didn't mind. The parents didn't take this as some 'sob story,' it was just how the boy preferred to be. That's why the dog was such a revelation in the child's life, it broke him out of his shell of shyness. He did have friends, as expected of any second-grader, though they weren't necessarily close enough for the boy to bring them over to his house or schedule any sort of 'play dates' with them. He was completely content with just playing with Felix.

The way the dog barked at him when he would steal his toys made him laugh. It was a friend that you could run around the house with and never get tired in doing so. No fights or pesky childish quarrels usually brought up around his age could break their relationship apart. When he was scared, his pet was there to hold and cuddle with as his fright subsided. Anytime he was sick, Felix was there by his side, waiting until the illness was gone so the pair may play together again.

The boy spent many years with the dog. It stayed his closest companion throughout many years, even during the time of most social development in children. Felix was the boy's best friend. However, one day, the boy came home and was, curiously, not greeted by the usual barking and tail-wagging of his furred friend. This confused the boy, and slightly worried him. For the past few years, Felix had, every single day, greeted him when the boy was home from school. Asking his parents, he learned that they had not seen the dog either as they searched for his best friend throughout the house.

They could not find Felix that day, or the day after. On the third day however, little hope was left, though the boy still tried. He almost needed the dog to move on, such as some one would frantically search for their closest friend if they went missing. It meant so much to the young boy, at a mere ten years of age. The third day was the revelation, almost.

While driving down the road, coming home from the market after getting their groceries, they spotted the dog on the side of the road. It was evidently Felix, the shining golden fur, legs shorter than most retrievers, and just the facial shape making it very recognizable as him. This time, though, the dog was not standing. Not running towards the boy, eyes not even open. No breath even moved his lungs up to shift the height of his stomach. That's what scared the boy. He didn't know how to react. His parents did not notice their child's dead pet laying there, they just kept on driving past, chatting with each other.

The boy got over the loss of his best friend in about a week.
