I sat in class, twirling my hair as I stared at the clock.  Only thirty more minutes until I could get out of here and go to lunch.  My stomach grumbled as I sighed lightly and went back to listening to the teacher.  At that moment, the door to the classroom opened, and in walked an angry looking boy.  Despite his thick eyebrows that seemed to be permanently furrowed together in anger, he was undeniably beautiful.  He stalked to the front of the room, and handed the teacher a note.

The teacher pointed to the seat next to me, and the boy walked to my table, slumping into the seat on the right of me.  He looked at me briefly, as if he were criticizing me.  I took the moment to take in as much detail of his face as I could. His emerald green eyes were framed by thick, dark lashes that were enough to make even the most beautiful girl jealous. He had tousled brunette hair was swept across his forehead and curled down around his ears; his jaw was clenched, making it even more defined.  He dropped his bag on the ground, his arm muscles moving beneath his black leather jacket.

“Hi.” I said.  He glanced at me and said nothing, but grunted in response.  “I’m Elodie, what’s your name?”

Again, he said nothing, completely ignoring me this time.  He removed his jacket, revealing a white short sleeved shirt and tattoos all along his arm.

“I’m Elodie.”  I said again.  “But you can call me Ellie, or El.  Anything is good really.  What’s your name?”

He sighed lightly in exasperation, but still said nothing.  I sighed in defeat and turned my attention back to the teacher.  The bell rang, signaling the end of class, and when I looked over, the boy was already out the door.

“What’s that guy’s problem?”  Abby asked, walking next to me and waiting for me to sling my black back over my shoulder. I pulled my long red-brown hair up so it wouldn’t get caught by my bag.

“Honestly, I have no clue.” I shrugged.  “I mean, the dude wouldn’t even tell me his name, but it’s fine.”

She groaned.  “I know you, El. Don’t try to get to know this one, he seems dangerous.” She wouldn’t even know danger if it bit her in the ass.

I waved my hand. “Oh please, he’s probably harmless.”

She linked her arm around mine.  “Let’s get lunch.”

We walked out of the classroom and to the lunch room, plopping down at a table with three of our closest friends: Nikki, Lucy, and Kathleen.

“Have you guys seen the new kid?”  Lucy asked, her eyes wide.

“Yeah, he’s in our Chem class.” I said, gesturing to Abby and me.

“He sat next to El.” Abby said.

“He’s so hot!” Kathleen squealed.

“But he’s scary.” Nikki shuddered.

“Speak of the devil, and he shall appear.”  Abby muttered under her breath as the boy walked past our table.  He glanced at me, smirk on his face.

“I think he heard you.” I chuckled, looking at them. Nikki’s eyes widened, and she squeaked, looking down. “Oh come on.” I rolled my eyes.  “He’s not scary.”

“Are you kidding me?” Nikki asked.  “That guy looks like he’d punch a puppy if it looked at him the wrong way. He just seems...abusive.”  I looked straight ahead, and stared at Harry’s back.  He was sitting at the table directly across from us, and he stiffened when he heard Nikki’s comments.  He stood up abruptly, storming to the trash can and dumping his lunch before storming out of the lunch room.  He pushed the doors open roughly, and they slammed behind him.

“Nikki, you can’t go calling people abusive if you don’t know them.” I scolded. “He heard you, and now he’s angry.”

“What do you care?” Abby asked, frowning at me.  “The guy didn’t even tell you his name. He’s obviously an ass.”

“Will you guys stop?” I snapped.  “He’s new here, I’m sure he just wants friends.”

Lucy shook her head vehemently, a few strands of dirty blond hair falling out of her ponytail. “Not us. He really does seem dangerous, Ellie.”

“You guys don’t even know what abusive or dangerous looks like.”

“And you do?” Kathleen scoffed.

“Well...no, but I had a friend back home who was abused.” I said, shifting uncomfortably in my seat.  “I’m going to buy food.”

I stood up and grabbed my wallet before walking out of the lunchroom.  I passed the guy who was leaning against the wall, a cigarette between his lips. He dragged the cigarette away from his mouth and let out a puff of smoke.  He scowled at the ground, and I went to stand next to him.

“Sorry about my friends.” I said, leaning against the wall.  He grunted and turned away from me.  “They can be real bitches sometimes.” He shrugged, and I sighed.  “I still don’t know your name.”

He threw the cigarette on the ground and ground it with the toe of his brown boot.  He walked away wordlessly, jamming his hands in his pockets, and hunching his shoulders.

A smile played on my lips.  This was going to be a challenge.
