*Kori's POV*
"Hello...?" I ask the caller curiously.
"Hi..? Kori?" The unknown yet slightly familiar voice utters.
"Yeah. This is Kori.. Who are you?"
"It doesn't matter. I just really need to tell you something. It's very important that you listen to me. I know how you're feeling. I am so terribly sorry that people are so cruel. Look... Kori, I don't really know how to say this.. but..."
There's a long silence before the voice speaks again.
"I really like you. You're beautiful. And you are so sweet. It hurts me so much having to see you go through all of that shit people give you at school. I just want you to know that I'm here for you. You don't know who I am.. yet. But you have my number. If you ever need anything, just give me a call... okay? Promise that you will. Because I can't stand the thought of knowing that you could be in danger. Just talk to me, please? Promise me." The person quickly professed.
A million thoughts tangled in my brain. Who was this person? Why were they contacting me? How did they get my number? How long did they like me? Were they being truthful? There were so many questions to be answered. The profound silence was urging me to say something, but I didn't know what to tell him.
"Uhh...." I stuttered out into the microphone.
"I have so many questions for you. For starters, how am I supposed to know I can trust you if I don't even know who you are? And it's a little stalkerish of you to call me, just randomly like this, and not tell me who you are. Or even tell me how you got my number. It's sweet of you to say such amazing things, but I'm not ready to trust you." I try to assert myself in a way that doesn't come off to harsh, but doesn't seem too soft either.
"Kori...." He starts, and then heavily sighs. "I know you don't want to trust me, and I don't blame you. If some random person called me and told me all of the stuff you told me, I wouldn't trust them either. But it's very important that you don't know who I am. You can't know who I am. Because if you did, this... This would be nothing. You would've hung up on me already."
My voice raises, slightly. "And you think that helps me trust you anymore?! You think that will help you? It won't. I can assure you. So why don't I just hang up on you right-"
He cuts me off. "No! Kori.. Please don't go. I'll make you a deal. You call me once everyday, more if you like, and just talk to me about your problems. Everything that goes wrong in your life. I'm willing to listen. And as soon as you can say you feel comfortable talking to me, I'll tell you who I am. Deal?"
I think it over carefully before answering. It sounds a little risky, but maybe that's what I need. Maybe I need risks. After all, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
"Oh what the hell? Why not?"
"Awesome! Now... tell me everything!"
"Okay..."
I tell (let's just call them Unknown) everything that has ever happened to me. Well, not everything. Everything to do with Jackson, and my home life, and my cutting. All of my deep, dark depression issues. Everything I could possibly tell him in an hour. The entire time I talked to him, he tried to be supportive, saying things like "Ohh.. I'm sorry." or "Tell me more about that."
He sounded like a therapist. It was creepy at first, but maybe it was something that I needed. I don't really know. I felt about 20 pounds lighter when we finished talking, though.
When I finally felt like we were done, and I assume he thought so too, he said, "I am SO sorry Kori. It sounds like what you've gotten into is a lot deeper than I ever thought. I feel so bad. I have to go though. Good night gorgeous. Same time tomorrow?"
I could hear him crying through the phone, and guilt spread through me when I had the urge to smile. He was being so sweet. And he genuinely cared. Something that doesn't happen often.
"Goodnight, whoever you are. Same time tomorrow. Goodbye."
And they hung up.
