“Oh damn she’s hot,” snapped James as she walked by. Circe kept her head down not looking as the guys that sat on the chairs making comments at her. She walked over to her desk and placed her books down sitting as she waited for the teacher. Coming here was getting worse every day and nearly impossible to have her own peace. As much as she tried to ignore the comments around her, she couldn’t, after all she had ears and ears were made to listen.
“I wouldn’t if I were you,” said Drake. Drake was part of James’s small gang in college, only he wasn’t as dumb as everyone else, he knew the limits.
“Oh why bro, you jealous?” asked James popping out a cigarette. He kept his eyes on the lady across the room which had taken his breath away as he pulled a lighter out.
“No douche, because she is not for you, she ain’t for anyone,” said Drake taking a quick glance at Circe.
Circe frowned but kept her head down; she hated it when people talked about her. Didn’t they know that she could hear? People might say being beautiful was a gift, but at the same time it was a burden. No guy loved you for who you were, they were after your body and nothing else, I mean who else knew better then her.
She shook her head getting all the thoughts away, she didn’t want to think about it, and she never wanted to think about that night ever again. It was a mistake meeting him, and it was a mistake being with him because she listened to his lies. Once a wounded heart, always a wounded heart.
“Circe?” asked a voice beside her and she turned around to see Lila looking at her.
“Hey Circe I was wondering, wanna come to the pub later on, I got some fake IDs,” she said winking as she held up three cards. The brunette from next to her was jumping with joy and went by the way Sasha.
“Yea girl! It’s time you loosen up,” she said giggling and Circe shook her head politely.
“No thank you,” she said her voice calm and collected as she replied the too familiar phrase. Sasha frowned and gave Lila a look.
“Oh come on girl, not all guys are like that,” she said but Circe refused, how would they know? It wasn’t like they got their heart broken and then stabbed over and over and over again till there were no tears to cry.
“Circe what do you say?” asked Sasha. Sasha batted her eyelids at her but of course these tricks never worked with Circe, she was determined never ever to fall in love. Because when you fall in love, you fall hard and when someone stabs you in the back…there is no one to help you up. No one to dry your tears or make you smile. There is just you, yourself and no one else.
“I have to work,” she whispered making them both groan. Of course this wasn’t fully a lie, she didn’t have to work but she did have to show up to work, which she dreaded. Her boss was just like every other guy, someone who just wanted her for her body.
She has to ignore his flirtations and his moves on her, why, well because she needed the money. Being a personal assistant to one of the cutest guys in town was hard enough but even more a struggle when he wouldn’t leave her alone.
But today was important, her boss had someone important coming in and she had to take a file in. Circe breathed a sigh of relief when the teacher came in and her friends sat down beside her making plans that didn’t involve her. All she had on her mind right now was a way to escape out of her boss’s office without him touching her and that wasn’t as easy as it sounded.
You would think life was hard but just not how hard it really was. Everything about Circe’s life was hard. She lived by herself in a doubly storey house at the edge of town looking over a beach, she drove an expensive Porsche all over town but she was still unhappy. Why you might ask, because these weren’t hers, these were her cousins. He called her over as soon as he heard what had happened with her, well her ex, and he took her under his wing like a protective brother, till he left a week ago for his holidays, abandoning her all alone.
And of course this made the guys all flock back to her. When her cousin was here, they were careful, they stood in their boundaries but now he was gone, she was unprotected and she was vulnerable.
Circe made her way to the office, driving carefully through the clustered roads and pulled into the understorey car park. She locked the car and rushed to the room, balancing the files in her hands. She ignored the looks she was getting from her fellow co-workers, especially the ones from the men as she made over to her boss’s office.
His name was on the door in bright gold letters, David Cunningham, it said. She knocked on the door and entered as he called her in, thinking of reasons not to quit this pathetic job.
She saw the familiar reaction he got when she walked in, the familiar dilation of the pupils and the breathtaking smile he gave her, but of course she was used to all this and nothing had an effect on her, or should we say no one had an affect on her anymore.
“Oh Circe, my Circe,” he said as he stood over and walked towards her. His hands touched hers briefly and she winced as he took the filed from her and placed it on the desk. Her breath fastened and she shifted feet feeling uncomfortable as his gaze raked over her as he sat on the edge of the table still holding both her hands in his own big ones.
She gave it a small tug, but that just made him smirk and pull her a bit closer.
“Um is there anything you want me to do Mr. Cunningham?” she asked and he smiled showing off his white pearls.
“How many times must I tell you to call me David,” he said. She squirmed as he stood up and took a step closer, too close for an employee and employer. Circe craned her head to look at him as he towered over her with his tallness making her even more vulnerable as he made his moves. He ran a hand over her arm making her close her eyes and bit her lips, trying to stop the urge she had to slap him. She couldn’t, she needed the money.
“How do you have such soft hands, it amazes me,” he said flipping his blonde hair out of his eyes. His blue eyes made her annoyed under their penetrating gaze and it took every muscle in her body not to run away from him.
“So tell me Circe, are you free tonight, after this meeting I would love to talk…and catch up,” he said licking his lips. He bent down and she let out a soft squeal, too tiny for their ears to pick up. There was a loud knock on the door and she stepped back thanking god for this opportunity.
“Who is it?” growled David, not taking his eyes of the beautiful lady that stood in front of me.
“The eater bunny, who do you think?” replied the deep and husky voice, grabbing Circe’s attention.
“Come in,” called David as he walked back to his chair, but not before giving Circe one last wink. She turned around and rushed out the room only to collide with the visitor. His arms grabbed her waist, stopping her from slipping and her face went red and she blushed, giving out a ferocious shade of pink.
“S-s-sorry,” she muttered looking up only to stare into the most beautiful pair of green eyes she had ever seen. He gave her a small smile before letting her go and she left the room walking as fast as she could trying to get that breath-taking face out of her mind.
