I day dreamed, all the time. It was what I got in trouble for the most at uni. Mum thought it would get me in detention more than it did, but that's not saying that it didn't get me yelled at a whole lot.
This time it was this boy I had seen on the internet while browsing Tumblr before class. I couldn't seem to find a name in any of the notes, just a bunch of comments on how cute he looked in his football kit.
I imagined us dating. I didn't now what he sounded like, so it made it kinda hard, so I took the frustration out by chewing my pencil.
"Avery!" my French professor Madame Daphne yelled out. I stopped chewing my pencil and looked up. The whole French class was looking and snickering at me. "Care to come back to earth and rejoin my class?"
My cheeks flushed, embarrassed.
"No professor, I think the rest of class would prefer that she staid in space. Maybe she'd keep her hands away from other people's boyfriends. " Callie called out, giggling with her group of friends in the back of the lecture hall. Callie and I had been best friends our 1st year, but then her boyfriend, of that day, and I accidently drunkenly hooked up at a frat party and she has dedicated her life to making mine a living hell since then. Before I could stand up and yell profanity, I calmed myself down and sank into my seat.
"That is enough Callie. Welcome back Avery." Madame Daphne smiled dryly and continued teaching us about the evolution of conjugation techniques.
"Ignore them, they're just assholes."
I turned around to the guy behind me who sat leaned forward with his elbows on the back of my chair. He and I had never actually talked before. I didn't even know his name.
"Thanks, I guess." I half-smiled and turned back around. The guy's snapback had SDMN on it, like the guys kit from the picture on Tumblr this morning.
I sat through the rest of class attempting to pay attention, though having no luck. I had written down every single abbreviation I could think of that made up SDMN, but there weren't any four word phrases that made sense.
"Alright, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and study long and hard for next week's test." The professor said, propping open the door to the classroom just as the bell rang. I got up and gathered my stuff, and toted it down the steps of the lecture hall.
"Hey! Wait up!" The guy who sat behind me called, stuffing his stuff in his bag and jogging down the steps to catch up with me. He caught into stride, and he smiled ear-to-ear at me. "I'm Tobi." He outstretched his arm to me, waiting for me to shake it. I kinda just looked at it. "You're supposed to shake it." He said, laughing shortly. He dropped his hand back to his side. When I flat out ignored him, he forged on. "Why do you and Callie hate each other?" He asked.
Why did this Tobi guy want to know about me? Usually sporty guys like him just either wanted to hookup or wanted homework answers.
"First of all, my name is Avery, but you already know that. And, I don't like Callie because she's a controlling selfish bitch. Plus all my friends and I have conflicting schedules this year so we don't have anything together, so that leaves me to be the victim of her endless misery." I said, continuing to not make eye contact.
"Well, Avery, do you wanna come to a party I'm having at my mates' house tomorrow night?" We continued walking all the way across the quad to the parking lot. "You don't have to answer now it's fine, I'd just really want to see you there."
"My friends and I usually go to this coffee shop downtown on Sunday mornings, but that may have to change depending on how tired I am after your party." I laughed, tucking my hands in my back pockets.
"That means you're going!" He jumped, his face completely lit up. "Here, give me your phone." Tobi said, holding out his hand. When I hesitated, he continued, "To put my number in."
I blushed, fishing my phone out of my pocket. I unlocked it and handed it to Tobi.
"Hey Tobi?" I asked.
"Hm?" He said, typing a bunch of stuff into a contact.
"What does your hat stand for?" I asked, seriously curious.
"Sidemen."
"Pardon?" I stopped walking. We were just a few feet from my silver Lincoln MKS.
"The Sidemen. Never heard of 'em?" He finish typing and closed out of my phone, handing back to me.
"No, who are they?" I said, putting my phone back into my pocket.
"My crew. You should check us out sometime." He said, turning and walking towards another car. I'd have to check out those guys, apparently Tobi was somehow correlated to the boy on Tumblr. "Anyways, I'll text you the address to my place. We can meet up there and I can drive us to the party."
"Okay," I smiled. "See you tomorrow."
Wait, so was this a date? If we are going to the party together, does that make it a date? Ugh oh.See, my last real relationship had ended really, really badly, which was a big reason why I was so uneasy. The guy I had dated, Johnnie, and I were really unhealthy. We used to date and breakup over and over for a solid 2 years. We were constantly having breakup sex, then making up, then fighting and breaking up again. It was at that rate until one night when Johnnie had hit me in the middle of a fight we'd been having. No, I'm not overreacting over some small slap. Yes, he had slapped me, but then he had pushed me up against the wall and had tried to tear my clothes off. Me, being in shock hadn't really wanted breakup sex, so I had slapped him back and ran away. Which led to him throwing a bottle of whiskey at me and it breaking and cutting my arm and cheek. And that was my over dramatic life story. This happened about a year ago.
That wasn't some story of why I can't have sex anymore or how I can't stand the feeling of other people touching me because, I am strong, I guess. I wasn't going to let one lousy ex-boyfriend ruin my fun. And trust me, I still have a bad tendency to hook up with random people at parties and drink to my hearts content, I just don't really have the ability to open up, so I just do everything with out any strings attached.
