It was season of Christmas. Season of joy, fun and love. Everybody was busy doing there last minute shopping. There was roar of life in the chilly weather. You could see people coming in or out, here or there and practically everywhere. One could feel rush and frenzy in the air of New York City. City that never sleeps. City that makes or breaks lives. City of dreams. City Of LOVE.
In the midst of never dying night life and tall and high buildings, there was a small little cafe of 2 floors on Rivington street. Built in early 19th century this old and rusty cafe was an antique piece of architect. It was one of those cafe where you get the feeling of love and home. Aroma of coffee beans and freshly baked muffins floated in air around the block. Right out of some cliche movie, this cafe was named LOVE JOINT. How it was named that, now that is story of some other time. Cafe was owned and ran by old lady of 60 years and her granddaughter.
Covered in white snow sign 'open' was hanging outside the entry door. Business was dull at this time of year as people preferred their home's rather than an Old cafe. Once Love joint used to be famous in this part of town. People used to come specially for baked goods and coffee but in last three years the cafe lost its glory along with its baker.
"Thank you for coming to Love joint?" sweet voice of Isabella rang in cafe. She was the granddaughter who worked as baker in morning and waiter in night.
"Isabella ! Time to close dear." Stiff voice of 60 year old Maria came from the kitchen as the last customer went out with clinging of little bell hanging on door.
"Right away, Grams. "
Isabella cleared the tables, cleaned them, took out pastries and muffin to store them and locked the door. It was common routine for her to close cafe at 9 everyday. She washed her hands on towel and went towards 'tips jar'. She counted money and kept them in safe. A wide smile broke out on her face at sight of white note at the bottom of jar. She took it out and kept it in her pocket safely.
After having loving dinner with her Grams, she hugged her and said her goodnights. Her room was on 2nd floor along with pantry. After brushing and changing into her pj's , She took out that folded note from her jeans and read it.
Dear Bella !
You looked beautiful today in your jeans and blue sweater. I know it was dull day for you as it is Christmas time. Frown lines were clearly visible on your forehead when you were taking orders from behind the counter. Please don't frown my love. It doesn't suit you. You should be smiling your pretty smile showing your pearly whites. It's Christmas and I wanted to gift you something but all my love wouldn't be able to fit in your tip jar. I am gonna celebrate holidays with my mum and sister. My sister thinks you are pretty too. I hope one day I could say that to you personally. I hope you have great holidays with your Grams.
Blueberry muffins were delicious.
Merry Christmas, my Love.
Yours truly 'I'
Isabella sighed and hugged the note. It wasn't something new to her. It all started 3 months ago when she got her first note while checking tip jar at night. First she thought it was a prank by kids but then they started to get dense and regular. she was scared but then the writer specified his no bad intentions and just wanted this rare friendship from someone. She was hesitant and started look for the person who dropped the tips but her working hours were hard and she couldn't
keep her eyes on the jar. Slowly she became comfortable with the notes. The idea of getting someones attention excited her in dull life. As it is the love that we all crave for.She kept the note in her last drawers along with other notes in a tin box and slept. Now she was used to getting these secret notes. HIS SECRET NOTES.
