Dear Rose, I am sorry. If you are reading this then I am gone. That means I have let you down. You trusted me and I have let you down. There is so much that I should have told you a long time ago but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.
First, your father is not dead. He left before you were born to save others who know the secret. You need to find him. You will have to travel near and far and ask whoever you encounter about him. His name is Fredrick. Fredrick Daunt.
Second, I was murdered because I knew the secret. It was most likely by an official working to ‘protect’ us.
Third, the secret is something that you must discover on your own. You must find it to prove you are brave enough to know it.
Please be safe. I wasn’t careful and put both of us in danger. The leaders of our society have been trying to keep the secret a…well…secret, but it was leaked. Those of us that were brave, like your father, have been working for almost twenty years to save our society. It is falling apart. You need to go as soon as possible and find your father. He needs your help.
Please remember that I love you. I love you more than anything in the entire world—you were my entire world. I know your father would love to meet you and see how amazing you are. You are brave.
I love you.
Forever and always.
P.S. Get rid of your Pod.
