Prologue
Z
I flick my tail in aggravation in the too small cage I'm in. The latch on the door is locked, but it's loose so I might be able to... I don't know though. That might be too obvious... Might as well try though... I shrug my shoulders. I seriously hate this fucking cage, it's too small. I flick my tail out the bars of my cage and try to bat at the lock. The latch moves slightly and I continue flicking it with my tail. Oh you must be wonder why I have a tail and what I am exactly. Well... I'm a fox-human hybrid and well... I was experimented on by scientists who turned me into this... this freak of nature. I also have ears, a fox-like personality, and I think like a fox sometimes. The catch finally releases the latch and the door swings open on silent hinges. I hop out of the cage and land on the floor on silent feet. The puppy hybrid near my cage has such a sad look on her face and she whines quietly at me.

The girl, I think Zoe is her name, hops out of her cage triumphantly and giggles quietly, but turns towards me when I let out a quiet whine. "Could you get the rest of us out too please?" I say quietly. She nods and walks over to the cage I'm being held in. There are ten of us hybrids in this room and we all have different types of animals combined with our genes. I'm a puppy-human hybrid. Zoe pops the latch on the cage of my door and helps me hop to the floor 'cause I'm unsteady on my feet, being the newest hybrid. I still have to get used to standing on two feet and I'm gonna have to learn how to hide my ears and tail when we get out of this prison-like lab. She smiles slightly at me and then motions for me to unlock the cages on my left and she'll get the ones on the right. I nod and use the counter to balance as I walk over to the cute puppy guy's cage to help him get out. She's the one who's been here the longest so she is probably more ready to escape than the rest of us are.

The fox girl gets the puppy girl out of her cage and gives silent orders to the puppy girl to help get the rest of us out of the cages. The girl uses the counter to balance herself as she walks over to me and stumbles over to my cage in surprise. Her face goes bright red and her tail wraps itself around her left leg because of her embarrassment. Her ears droop and she gives me a shy smile as she unlocks my cage. I hop out of my cage and give her a small smile which she returns. " Here, I'll help you." I hunch over so she can put her arm around my shoulders and I put my hand on her waist.
"Thanks," She murmurs, her face flushing pink.
"No problem.. um..."
"Lacey," She says.
"No problem Lace," I whisper, "Now let's get the others out." She nods and blushes at the nickname I gave her. We unlock the fox guy's, the wolf girl's, and the bunny guy's cages and they all hop out of their cages silently while the fox girl unlocks the other cages. She points towards the window and walks towards it quickly. It's unlocked and she opens it with ease. I look down and realize we are two stories off the ground. I tap fox girl's shoulder and she turns to me in annoyance.
"Max right? There's a ladder next to the window so we can go down that," She snaps quietly. I nod my head and she sends me out first and then Lace follows me down shakily. My feet touch the ground and I moan quietly, feeling the soft grass in between my toes. Lace slips on the ladder and I catch her before she hits the ground. She's shaking in fright and I hold her close.
"Shh... I got you Lace," I whisper, scratching behind her ear and she calms down.

Zoe sends me down the ladder after Max and I slip about halfway and I think I'm about to get terribly injured when warm arms engulf my shaking body. "Shh... I got you Lace," Max whispers as I feel him scratch behind my ear comfortingly so I can calm down. I look up at the ladder and see the bunny guy and girl are coming down right now. I snuggle into Max as he backs up so the bunny hybrids can get down easier. He chuckles softly and sets me down in the grass. I wag my tail a little when I feel the grass beneath me. It's so soft.

The fox girl lets me out of my cage last and heads over to the window quickly. I follow her and she already has the window open. The puppy boy taps her shoulder and she turns around, rolling her eyes. "Max right? There's a ladder next to the window so we can go down that," She snaps quietly. So puppy boy's name is Max and the girl sends him down first and then the puppy girl goes down after him. The girl motions to me and Cameron, I think, and sends us down the ladder. I hop off the ladder a few rungs up and land lightly next to the two puppy hybrids. They seem really close even though they just met. Max sets the girl down in the grass and her tail wags a bit when she feels the grass. I have to admit that this grass feels really good under my feet and I'm happy we're finally getting out of that prison-like lab. Cameron lands beside me and chuckles at my expression.
"What?" I whine at him, "Why're you laughing at me?"
"You and your adorable thinking expression. Jessi right?" He asks.
"Yeah," I say, running my fingers through my hair and wiggling my ears in frustration.
"Well I'm Cameron and you just had the most adorable thinking expression on your face when I landed here. What were you thinkin' 'bout love?" He asks.
"Just how soft this grass is and that the two puppy hybrids over there seem really close even though they just met," I whisper as his hand finds its way behind my ear and rubs it softly. I giggle and he smiles the most adorable smile ever afterwards. He has a dimple. I think I just died. I think to myself.
"You like my dimple," He chuckles, wiggling his eyebrows with a smirk on his face.
"Did I say that out loud?" I ask, blushing deeply. He nods, chuckling and a thump beside me brings me back to the present. I notice that everyone has gotten out of the building and the fox girl is looking impatiently at me and Cameron.
"Alright quick introductions! I'm Zoe," The fox girl says once she has everybody's attention, "We'll go around clockwise."
"I'm Ace," The fox guy says.
"I'm Lacey," The puppy girl says.
"I'm Max," Max says.
"I'm Vicky," The kitten girl says, flicking her ears.
"I'm Niall," The kitten guy says.
"I'm Jessi," I say, smiling slightly.
"I'm Cameron," Cam says.
"I'm Daisy," The wolf girl says.
"I'm Harry," The wolf guy says.
"Now let's head out before they notice we've escaped," Zoe says quickly, motioning for us to follow her to the south, "There's a cabin about ten miles from here and we'll be able to get there by sunrise if we hurry."

Max crouches down and motions for me to get on his back. I hop on to his back and lock my arms tight enough around his neck that I won't fall and loose enough that I won't strangle him accidentally. He chuckles as I set my chin on his head, liking the feeling of his curls, that are so soft, tickling my neck and nose. He gets to his feet and walks quickly after everyone else, locking his hands just above my knees, under my legs.
