Chapter 2

The bucket of cold water was dangerously close to slip out of my hands. I walked as quietly as possible over to the bed. Her bouncy blonde curls were a mess and her blue eyes were closed. She looked totally relaxed, but not for long. I quickly turned the bucket around, letting the cold water pour on her face. She immediately let out a scream and opened her eyes.

“John! I’m so gonna get you for this!” Melissa shouted while brushing soaked locks of hair out of her face. “In your dreams.” I said jokingly, even though I knew she would actually get me for this. That’s the thing about her, she always gets her revenge.

Melissa shot me one last glare and closed her eyes again. “What time is it?” “6:30, so I’m leaving to work now.” “Oh… I’ll just sleep some more. Don’t wake me up when you leave or come back or what ever. Just don’t wake me up.” she warned. “I won’t.” I said witha devilish grin on my face. We both knew I wouldn’t resist the temptation. “Bye then.” she muttered. “Goodbye Melissa! I’ll see you afterwards then!” I said unnaturally loud, just to make sure she wouldn’t fall asleep just yet.

I got off the buss, looking for Anniken. She wasn’t at the buss station this morning, so I became worried. I had sent her a text, asking if she was sick, and she hadn’t answered.

Anniken was not here… Why should she be? Our work doesn’t end at the same time… She was probably sick, that was why she isn’t here I convinced myself. Just as I started on my way home, I heard her. Her footsteps that I had memorized, yes I’m creepy, how the slight wind was whipping her clothes around.

“Anniken?” I asked carefully as I turned around. She was standing with her head bent down so I couldn’t see her face and her hair was untidy, which was weird because she normally would rather die than go out looking too sloppy.

She gently lifted her face, letting me see her tear-streaked face and blotchy eyes. “John.” she said emotionless. “What happened?” I asked walking over to her. “Nothing...” she said, looking at the ground again.

“Was it Jared?” I asked. She shook her head, then nodded. “Is that a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’?” “It’s a… yes.” she said, letting out a sob. The sound felt like a dagger being stabbed into my heart. How could he do this to her?!

“What did he do?” I asked carefully. “I can’t tell you...” she said sadly. “Why?” “I just- can’t.” “Did you guys break up?” I asked, I think the hopefulness could be heard in my voice. What a douche I am! Here I am, hoping for them to have broken up when she obviously is in pain.

“No.” “Then what is it then?!” I shouted unwillingly. I saw even more tears gather in her eyes, as she turned and walked away from me. She muttered something to herself that I couldn’t hear.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like that? I just… I’m just… I’m worried about what he did to you!” I said, grabbing her wrist. She struggled to get loose, but I wouldn’t let her.

“Why do you care so much?! You barely know me! You don’t even know if I have siblings! You don’t even know my worst fear! How can you be worried for me when you don’t know me?! Now, LET ME GO!” She shouted, making strangers who were walking by, awkwardly stop to see if we were hitting each other or something. I let go of her in shock and she quickly left. Her words were stuck in my head. How can you be worried for me when you barely know me? Yeah, why do I worry so much? Is this more than just a crush?

I quickly snapped out of my thoughts when an old lady came over to me and tapped my shoulder. “You shouldn’t just let her go, she obviously needs you.” The old lady said and walked away just as suddenly as she came. What did she mean with that? She should be able to walk away from me, but what if the old lady was right? What if she needs me now, just as a friend. I can do that. I can play the friend role until she realizes I want to be more that just that.
