_______________________"Crowe, Tomlinson, you two are on call tonight for patient Niall Horan with Dr. Isla, Pearson and Styles you guys are on call for Miranda Reeds with Dr. Malik." Dr. Cael informs all of us interns after we've treated the trauma case and most of us are getting ready to go home.
I glance over at Louis, but he doesn't look at me. I think I upset him earlier when I walked away when he was talking to me. "Well what are you standing here for? You have patients to take care of!" Dr. Cael. Harry, Louis, Kit and I all rush out of the locker room and to our patients rooms to meet up with our attendants.
The elevator ride up to Niall's room is very awkward. "Louis, can we talk?" I plead. "Oh so now you want to talk to me?" He scoffs. "Lou, I'm sorry. I was in a bad mood earlier." I sigh. He pays no mind. "You're telling me." He mutters. "Can you just stop? I'm sick of this little diva act okay?" I snap. I was getting real tired of his attitude real fast. He turns to look at me. "Oh so it's fine if you're a bitch, but you suddenly have a problem when I be one?" Louis laughs sarcastically.
"Louis, we have to spend the entire night together, let's try not to fight." I suggest, taking a deep breath. "Fine. I just won't talk to you, because you can't fight if you don't speak." Louis says, stepping out of the elevator. "Fine, I didn't feel like talking to you anymore anyways." I follow him out of the elevator and down the hall. We walk in silence into Niall's room and are greeted by Dr. Isla.
"Hello Dr. Crowe, Tomlinson." She smiles at us. Walking over to Niall's bedside, she motions for us to follow. "So in surgery yesterday, we stitched up the tear in his heart. But that is only a temporary fix, it should last him until we can find a transplant." Dr. Isla informs us. I nod at this information. "So how long does he have to wait to get a new heart?" I ask.
"We're not sure, hopefully a few weeks, but that's unlikely. We're looking at around 2 months, judging by his position on the waiting list." She answers. I try to slow my suddenly increased heart rate by taking a deep breath. "And you're sure that this stitch on his heart will last until then?" I ask, my voice weakened like I was regaining my voice after losing it. "It should, if not, then we will try to put a new one in. He needs to be closely monitored, and he can't get his heart rate up or else that could increase the risk of him going into another cardiac arrest." Dr. Cael explains.
I take in this information. He has to lie in this bed for possibly months, just waiting for a heart, no promise that he'll even make it long enough to get that heart. It scares me, I just feel this protective sense over him, and I hate this uncertainty of whether or not we can save him. Niall looks at the floor, expressionless. I go sit on the chair next to his bed.
"I'm going to get some rest now, page me if you need me." Dr. Isla says, leaving the room. Immediately my mind is flooded with flashbacks of the last time I was in this situation. "Are you nervous Niall?" I ask. He shrugs. "I trust that the doctors here will do everything the can to keep me alive, so I don't really have that much to be nervous about. And she said so herself that I shouldn't get my heart rate up and God knows how fast your heart starts beating when you're stressing about something." Niall says. I was amazed by his sense of calm.
"Well I'm glad that you feel that way, it's always best to keep a positive mindset." I smile. He grins back at me and I melt inside. He had the most adorable smile. "So where is your family, if you don't mind my asking?" I ask, trying to start conversation. "You don't have to answer that if you don't want to Niall, she doesn't need to be bothering you with questions like that." Louis interrupts. I glare at him.
"Oh it's alright. I talked to my mum yesterday, they are still back in Ireland and don't have enough money for the plane fare. So my mum is coming next week because she got a cheap flight." Niall explains. I feel awkward for asking now, it seems like such a personal thing that I shouldn't be asking about. "Aw I'm sorry mate, I know how that goes." Louis says. Niall looks at him intently. "Big family, divorced parents. Not a whole lot of money circling around in that house either." Louis grimaces at the memory. Niall nods understandingly. I, on the other hand don't get what they're talking about.
I grew up an only child of wealthy parents who wanted me to become someone great. So I plan to make a medical discovery or something. Become a world class surgeon. I played violin, cello, and piano as a child, got all A's in school and was the team captain of the girls soccer team. I was always studying or practicing, I didn't really have a ton of free time. But according to my parents, that was the price I had to pay if I wanted to aspire to be someone important.
"Well it's pretty sick that you're here as a surgeon now." Niall says in awe. Louis grins. "What do you do Niall?" He asks. "I'm a sound engineer." He answers proudly. I thought that was pretty cool. "That's really neat!" Louis exclaims, as if reading my thoughts. Niall flashes that cute little grin again. He leans back in his bed and closes his eyes. Glancing at the clock on the wall, I see that it's nearly midnight. We should probably stop talking and let Niall sleep.
"Well we've kept you up long enough, you should go to sleep now." I say, pulling up his blanket. I go over to the chair beside Louis' and sit beside him to give Niall some space. "Couldn't stay away from me huh?" Louis smirks. I glare at him. "Believe me, I did not come over here to sit with you, I came to let Niall sleep." I snap back. He rolls his eyes. "You can take the first shift." I say, trying to be annoying. He gives me a look, but doesn't say anything. "Fine." He finally mutters. I smile to myself and make myself as comfortable as I can in my chair.
__________________________I awaken sometime later to hushed voices beside me. Opening my eyes and sitting up, I find Louis and Harry talking in the doorway. "Harry? What are you doing here?" I ask. "Kit is watching the patient, I had to use the bathroom so I decided to stop by on my way back." He explains. I nod my head and sit back down and try to go back to sleep. I don't know how much longer Harry is here for, but I do know that the next time I see him is not where I ever planned to be.
__________I'm moving. Someone is carrying me. Opening my eyes, I see a brown mop of curls and bright green eyes. "Harry?" I murmur. He looks down at me. "You woke up!" He exclaims softly. Walking into the on call room he sets me down on one of the beds. "Why are you carrying me?" I ask. "You were asleep and I didn't want to wake you." He says casually. "Yeah but where is Louis? I have to do my shift!" I start to sit up.
"Louis is going to come in a little while, Dr. Isla will be taking over his shift for the rest of the night." Harry explains. "And Dr. Malik has mine so Kit and I are going to be getting some rest as well, she's above you right now." He adds. I look up at the underside of the top bunk above me. "Where are you and Louis going to sleep?" I ask, looking around the small room. "Well I was just going to bunk with Kit, and then Louis with you, since you guys are a couple and all." He grins cheekily. I mentally sigh, the last thing I wanted to do tonight was sleep with the one guy that I'm mad at.
"Yeah that's fine." I say, even though my mind is yearning to say a completely different story. Harry pats me on the arm before hopping up onto the top bunk with Kit, whom I'm sure had no objections to this sleeping arrangement.
Minutes later, the door opens and a figure slips inside the room. Then the blankets are lifted and I feel Louis climb in beside me in the small bunk. I don't roll over or show any signs that I have even acknowledged his presence. "Goodnight Finley." He whispers. I don't say anything back, pretending to be asleep. But inside, I want to stop fighting with him, I've just got too much pride to be the first one to apologize.
Rolling over, I realize how close we actually are. His body is pressed against mine, but gently. At least he's my best friend so this isn't too awkward. But there's only one person in this hospital who I would actually want to be in this situation with and that's Niall. I really should try and talk myself out of this budding crush I've got on him, but it's so hard, and there's no harm in having that one little secret right?
After all, a secret is only harmful if the wrong person finds out.
