IT'S ONLY THE FIRST DAY.

It was the first day of school again. Another year to go through. Evelyn had forgotten how many times she had stepped through the doors of a brand new school. The commons were full of kids. Bright, excited faces. As much as Evelyn tried to "brighten up" she simply couldn't. She barely knew anyone from her eighth grade year in the new Middle School and she certainly didn't recognize anyone at the High School. You'll be fine.. she told herself. She held her schedule in her hand, and her backpack straps hung at both her shoulders.

"You're a Freshman, right?" a blonde girl asked. She wore a shirt with the words "LINK" written across her chest.

"Uh, Yeah." Evelyn replied quietly.

"Cool, need any help finding your classes?"

"I've got most of them figured out from yesterday," she cleared her throat. "But I still don't know where this one is."

Evelyn pointed to the very last class on her schedule. She had been able to find the other classrooms the day before at "Freshmen assurance day." But this one was no where to be ound in the actual school.

"Oh! You have to board a bus for that one," the girl took the paper from Evelyn's hands and scanned through it, then continued.  "Okay so, you have it on day one; periods one and two. You'll need to get a on a bus labeled 'Sabin' when you have Animal Science and that bus will take you to the Center. Someone else will help you out there."

Evelyn nodded in understanding and grabbed the paper when the girl handed it back. "Thanks." she said, with a warm smile.

"I'm here to help." the girl responded, pointing to the words on her shirt. "But you better get going, the bell is about to ring."

Taking her phone out of her pocket, Evelyn checked the time and nodded. She then looked back up at the girl before turning and heading to her first period class, calling out to the girl. "Thanks again!"

AFTER.

The school day had not been so hard on Evelyn. After all, first days were supposed to be easy. They were mostly "Get to know your teacher!" or, "Get to know your classmates!" and: "This is what the class will look like for the rest of the year."

Evelyn walked down the stairs of the bus, a few people got off with her. Most of the girls were chit-chatting among themselves. Walking ahead of them, Evelyn pulled out her phone. She scrolled down her contacts list to find Sophia's number. Was it horrid? Evelyn typed, then sent the text message.

Everyone here sucks.. Sophia replied; almost instantaneously.

Aw, that really sucks.. no one to hang out with yet, then?

Well there is someone.. this boy, named Connor.

A boy, eh? Hahaha. At least you've got someone. :)

Yeah, what about you? No one still?

Nope.. seems I'll be a loner.. Again.

Evelyn sighed quietly at her own text. She finally reached her house. It was a little mobile home, nothing fancy. Though she loved that she finally had a "house."  As a kid her friends had always said she didn't live in a house. Whenever she would invite someone over with the phrase "Do you want to come over to my house?" the girl would always reply: "You don't live in a house, you live in an Apartment." It hurt whenever someone said that because all of them lived in big, fancy houses. But.. no one ever thinks about how the simplest of words can hurt; right?
