Chapter 1
I lay on my back, the heat of the burning houses around me and the smoke was killing me. I couldn't move, blood ran from the gash on my forehead. Screams echoed in my head, the world going fuzzy. A house collapsed behind me, showering me with ashes. The hot embers stung my skin and I attempted to get up, failing and falling back down. A hand as cold as ice touched my arm. My vision too blurry to see who it was. An arm went under my knees and another under my shoulders, lifting me up before I blacked out.
I woke up beside a stream, trees surrounding me and sunlight streaming down through the branches. My throat was dry and my skin burned. I crawled to the waters edge. Scooping up water to drink.
"Feeling better?" Someone said behind me.
I turned to see a boy sitting on a large rock. The light reflecting off the water danced on his pale skin. His eyes almost hidden by dark hair.
"Yeah...I guess...who are you?" I asked.
"William..." he answered hesitantly.
I tried to stand but fell again, into the water. I heard a small laugh and the boy walked over and offered a hand. I took it and stood. My head throbbed and I leaned against him, my head softly hitting his chest. I grabbed his shirt to keep myself from falling. He froze and I stumbled back.
"I'm sorry." I said. "I didn't mean to-"
"Its ok." He cut me off.
I sat down heavily, the throbbing pain in my head worse.
"What's your name?" He asked sitting back down on the rock.
"Memory." I answered and started to get up, I needed to get home.
The boy watched me as I walked into the trees. My ripped and now soaked dress catching the bushes. The white fabric stained with dirt. I climbed over a log, the skirt catching again and and adding a new tear. My shoes were left behind beside the stream. Suddenly the boy was in front of me, having slipped aroung me while I was detangling my dress.
"You don't want to go back." He said.
I shoved him, making him stumble back. He grabbed onto me as he fell, making me fall on top of him to act as a cushion.
"Hey! I don't know what your trying to do but-"
I was cut off as he slipped, going of the small cliff and we hit the ground five feet bellow. I yelped as my breath was knocked out of me.
"Um...maybe you should let go of me..." I suggested, trying to get up. "I need to go back."
"There is nothing to go back to, Memory." He said. "Everything is burned."
My eyes went wide.
"Everyone is dead?" I gasped. "There's nothing left?"
He shook his head with a sad look in his eyes.
"I only had time to save you." He let go of me.
I sat back, still sitting on him.
"Why did you save me out of all the people?"
"You were dying. Everyone else was at least trying to escape...you were just lying there" He explained.
I sighed, getting up and standing over him.
"Do you have have any clothes?" I asked.
He shook his head. I continued through the trees. Finally making it to the village. There were bodies in varied conditions. I searched through the wreckage, finding what once was my home. My parents lay dead a few feet away. I cried, kneeling next to them. William came to my side.
"I'm sorry Memory..." he said, his voice sad and sympathetic.
He hesitantly put an arm around me, I leaned against him, not caring how awkard it was. We sat there for about an hour before I stood shakily and made my way into the wreckage of my home. I found what was left of my room, the soft blue paint of my walls completely destroyed. My jewelry box sat among the ashes, it burned around the edges but the contents was unharmed. I set it on a large piece of wall and kept searching. Finding an ashy t-shirt, and pair of jeans with holes burned into the legs. I hurried back with clothes and jewlery box under my arm. My light brown hair a mess but I quickly smoothed it down and ran to William, who was putting a stone on two piles of loose ashy soil. He turned to me and I hugged him, dropping the stuff in my hands.
"Thank you" I said and gathered my stuff again.
He stood there for a moment before walking toward the trees again. I followed, as soon as we got back to the stream I collapsed and laid on my dress. The silky fabric pillowing my head. I fell asleep.
Well, Apparently my stories desire to delete themselves...so i have to put everything back up.
