Journal Entry 1: August 16, 2016
I, Mighty Melon, have just crash landed from my yellow Poptropica blimp. As I look around, there is no other way to escape. I unbuckle myself from my green backpack (or is that a parachute?) and I fall to the ground. I feel the harsh coldness of the barren Yukon forest. I walk around to keep myself warm.
As I look to the left, I see- a book? I walk over there and jump to pick it up. I look into the wilderness handbook- but it seems as though the pages have been torn from it, with only the last page remaining. I put it in my bag, worthless for the time being.
I stroll over to the right and I jump on top of a root, then to a rock. On my left there is a branch- it looks like I could use it for fire! I jump on top of it, and it tumbles down, along with me. I put it in my bag. I need more materials for fire, so I explore some more.
I jump on top of a branch to my right, and it bounces me up. I see a page- for the handbook, maybe! I grab it before I fall down again. I attach it to the handbook, and it says, "pg 3: WHERE TO BUILD YOUR FIRE." As I scan it, I learn that you have to build a fire where your materials won't get blown away, and that the smoke can easily escape. Well-ventilated. It also has to be dry, but I mean, DUH, of course! I stuff it it my bag.
I go all the way to the left, and there is a little woodpecker! I jump up and try to say hey, but it flies away- past another handbook page! It states that I need tinder, kindling, and logs. I saw a bird's nest to the far right- kindling, and I have the logs. But how to get the kindling?
Focus, I tell myself, on how to get the tinder first.
Hmm...well maybe I can get the bird to distract the squirrel in front of the bird's nest. I chase the bird all the way to the nest- it works! I grab the nest, wondering if it was the woodpecker's.
I go right, bounce up some branches and find another handbook page. Man these things are everywhere! I read that I need flint and a striker. Flint is found all over the place, so I explore once more.
Going right, I find mittens inside a log- weird. I put them on, and on top of a tree another page. Not surprised. It tells me how to build the fire, but I don't even have the flint yet! I find a boulder, but I can't move it- not without a tool. You know, when I started, I did see something to the left. I run all the way back, and- what do ya know another page. Something about stout sticks. Running left I pull an ax handle out of a tree trunk. I run to the boulder and I pry it two times. I have everything except the striker. I remember that there was a backpack near the ax, and as a run left to get it, I say to myself, I am such an idiot. I tap the blue bag and a striker falls out.
Just my luck I didn't see this earlier.
I run back to the boulder (again) and I pry it two times, and it makes a ventilated space the handbook was talking about. But I run back and I find that it had opened up a cave and- revealed flint! I picked it up, and I went into the cave.
It was dark, and ahead I could see wood with light from above revealing it- kindling, by the looks of it. Nice and dry. But- it was winter, this was a cave, and I could hear deep snoring. Since I'm not dumb, I concluded that -duh- there was a hibernating bear.
Now how to get through, I wondered. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness of the cave, I saw some shiny droplets, some breaking in the middle of the fall.
How is that happening?, I pondered. It's not like there's a bridge there or something--
I considered that. I was right- there IS a bridge! I softly jumped up there, like a cat. Jumping over the gap, I strolled over to the end, proudly grabbing the kindling.
Exiting out, I jumped on the fallen tree then slid down the boulder, into my little area.
Okay this is it. Don't mess it up, I told myself. I cleared an area with my gloves. I laid down the nest and I striked the flint over it. When it started to catch fire, I quickly blew on it. Rapidly laying down the kindling and logs over it, I finally laid back and let out a sigh of relief as the fire blazed before me. I laid down and decided to rest. Ready for another day of adventure.
