I Only See Red

Head spinning
Mouth dry
Ears ringing
Heart beating
And the person who promised to stay by my side
Eyes wide in shock
Yelling in fear
Running so far away
Trying to escape
But only meets
Red

Red
Red like the color of Danger
Impending pain and suffering
A warning
A sign
Run before it's too late
A traffic light flashes red
But it's too late
Life flashing before his eyes
Whispering "thank you"
To the ones that never heard him
The ones who cared for him
The ones who cried for him
The ones who carried on
He saw red

Red
Red like the color of blood
Pumping through her veins
It's disturbing
Bright
Toxic color
Like an ignored warning to stay away
She couldn't turn around fast enough
The knife met her back
Coughing blood
Eyes watering
She saw red

Red
Red like the color of hate
It's as if there will always be a monster
Looming around in the shadows
Sinister eyes darting from right to
Left
Who will it's next victim be?
It entered the house silently
Making sure not to disturb the dog sleeping soundly on the floor
It shook you awake
And you slowly gave in
And you could love your
lover no longer
You saw red

A delicate spring flower blooming in my heart
The green grass is as soft as wool
The white cotton candy clouds dance overhead
The sky is stained a soft shade of blue
A yellow blanket is spread over a patch of grass
With a wicker basket lying in the middle
And four people laughing and talking loudly with each other. A young happy girl spoke first.
"Did you hear? There's a new season coming out in September!"
A charming blonde teen spoke next, pointing to the girl.
"We've just started dating!"
A sassy hipster teen smiled kindly, and congratulated the two.
"Good for you! I've always known you two would get together."
And finally, a short young boy began to speak.
"I got my driver's license last week. The green N on the back of my car is proof."
He smiled cheekily, his childish grin making everyone chuckle.

A fluffy white dandelion loses its seeds with the soft wind in my heart
The grass is yellow
And the blue sky is clear
A yellow blanket with a small hole on the left side sits spread out on the ground
With half a deck of cards lying unused in the middle
And three people talking loudly to each other
"Did you hear? He died within seconds!"
The girl marveled at how fast dying could take.
"We've been dating for 3 months now, we're pretty much inseparable."
The male teen scratched the back of his neck.
"That's so sweet."
The sassy girl licked her lips as she cooed, with a smirk on her smug face.

A brown leaf falls into the yellow, red and brown ground in my heart
The grass is a bright green again.
The sky is decorated with greying rain clouds that sprinkle raindrops
A yellow blanket with a few big holes in it lies on the leaf covered ground
With an umbrella laying unused in the middle
And two people talking to each other
"Did you hear? She was stabbed from behind!"
She chirped eagerly, staring at the boy cutely.
"Yes, I heard. We've been dating for seven months now, sweetheart."
He smiled, and stroked her head.
"Well, okay..."
"Is something wrong?"
"It's just... Those two are gone..."
"Yeah, it's sad."
"Will you leave me like they did?"
"Of course not! I'll always be here by your side. I promise."
"Really?"
"Really."
He smiled kindly, and she returned it to him.
"Thanks."

Red
Red like love
A bond between people that can tie or untie
Sweet on the outside
But if you go too deep it's dangerous
Like a rose garden filled with thorns
She ignored the red traffic light
She didn't see the warnings
She couldn't sense the monster
She plunged in head first
Swimming deeper
Darker
But she couldn't find her way back to the surface
She held onto the only hope she had
The one boy who had the gentlest voice
The brightest smile
The funniest jokes
The warmest hand
But she did not see red

A single snowflake falls among the constant rain pour in my heart
The grass is covered in an ugly layer of slush
The sky could not be seen, for the raindrops were too many
A yellow blanket lay wet on the winter ground
A knife lay in the middle, screaming out to be used
One person sat alone in silence

Her lips began to move.
"Did... you hear?"
She whispered to herself, her tears being washed away by the rain.
"After...a...year..."
"He..."
She paused for a few short seconds, sniffling.
"...left me."
She slapped a cold hand over her mouth, and began to sob louder.
"I... I'm a-all alone!"
The rain seemed to pour louder to cover up her cries.
The knife glinted as she picked it up slowly. She brought it close to her neck.
She swallowed, and closed her eyes.
"I..."

Red
Red like the color of bitterness
Like a bad taste on the tongue
That the mind wishes to go away
She had to stop it before it hurt anyone
Like an evil beast waiting to strike

"I..."
She brought the knife closer, but hesitated for a second.
"I... can't take this... anymore."
She laughed bitterly, throwing her head back in angst
Her eyes shining with madness
And tears of depression streaming down her pale cheeks along with the cold rain
"... I still love him."
She mumbled, hushing her cries for a few seconds. She smiled weakly, bringing the knife to make a small cut on her pale neck. It stung dearly, but she let it slide.

And then it happened.

Blood spurted out of the cut  I made, and I  dropped the knife almost immediately. I brought a shivering hand up to my mouth, and coughed up the precious red liquid. Hurting to speak, I whispered to no one in particular.

"D-Did y-you... Hear?..."
I coughed up some more blood, spitting the bitter taste out of my mouth while my head met the well worn yellow blanket beneath me. My heart felt as if it was beating too quickly and not at all. In horrible pain, and spoke my last three words softly.

"I'm...f-finally home...."

Red
Red like happiness
Like a place where she could let it all go
A place where all of my fears and anxiety were swept away by the waves
With one final breath, she smiled and her tired eyes fluttered shut.
As the life left her body, it seemed as if the rain had stopped instantly. Blood stained the well loved blanket, and within a few hours someone had found her body.

The boy she loved.

Red
Red like the end of a grand battle
I fluttered away, and everything was gone from my sight. Maybe here he could be with my forever. This place of
Danger
Blood
Hatred
Love
Bitterness
Happiness

I smiled at my friends all around me, laughing and talking again. The yellow blanket was new again, and the knife was no where in sight. I now knew what I had been missing, the final puzzle piece that needed to be fitted into place. Finally, I saw red.
