CHAPTER 1 (JILL)

Every girl dreams of becoming a princess in a fairy tale, living in a palace, having maids and servants running after you to assist your every need, balls and parties here and there, and of course, a knight in shining armour, well, not me.. not anymore because one day I woke up and boom! I was a princess and believe me it wasn't really like the ones in story books, not in my case. 

After living a normal life for fifteen years, my world became a rollercoaster ride. I found out or technically, they found out that I was the illegitimate sister of Vasilisa Dragomir, a princess of the dying line of the Dragomirs. Lissa's bestfriend, Rose Hathaway, was charged treason for murdering Queen Tatiana Ivashkov, the former queen of the Moroi and damphirs. Moroi are living vampires which you can easily identify for their tall and skinny body and pale skin. On the other hand, damphirs are the combined result of human and Moroi or damphirs and Moroi back in the time when the three races freely intermingle with each other. Damphirs can't reproduce by themselves that's why they need Moroi to keep their race. Damphirs possess the body built of human and the reflexes and sharp senses of the Moroi making them an ideal guardian. They dedicate their lives protecting Moroi from any danger especially against Strigoi. Strigoi are evil, walking dead vampires who kill to live. Moroi drink blood from feeders, humans who willingly give their blood for the endorphins vampire bites give them, but drink only a little while Strigoi drain their victims. 

During Rose's hearing, Ambrose handed her a letter from the late queen telling her that Lissa can have the spot of the Dragomirs on the council because she is not the only living Dragomir, there's another and the late queen believes that only Rose can help Lissa. And that's how they ended up finding me and that's how my life turned upside down. 

After the revelation of my true identity, Lissa not just had her spot in the council, she was then also elected as the new queen of Moroi and damphirs. She was only eighteen and there are many people who opposes her because of the age decree where damphirs will be sent to field at sixteen and the family law which states that a royal must have atleast a living member to have a spot on the council. Those who opposes her wants to remove her from her throne and thought, since she wouldn't be an easy target because of her numerous guardians around her, that the best way to remove her from her throne was to remove me. They tried to kill me during a dinner party we attended and they succeeded. Technically they did. But thanks to our friend, Adrian Ivashkov, who brought me back to life. Moroi wield elemental magic: air, water, fire and earth. Adrian was a spirit user. It was a rare magic that only few were known to possess, Lissa, Sonya Karp, Avery Lazar, Nina Sinclair, and Robert Doru. Spirit users can heal, they can walk dreams and have really strong compulsion. These are only few of there abilities. If they can heal, they can also bring back to life dead people. That's what Adrian did to me. He used spirit to bring me back which in return made me shadow kissed. It also created a one-way psychic bond which make me feel his thoughts even before he speaks, feel the ups and downs of his emotions as if it was my own. Living in his head was a fair trade of having my life back. There Rose is a shadow kisssed too. She was bonded with Lissa or well she used to. Tasha Ozera, Lissa's boyfriend's aunt, shoot her after she revealed that it was Tasha who framed her up and who killed the queen. Rose recovered from life-and-death situation by herself and discovered that the bond was gone. She told me that it would take time before i can learn how to block Adrian's thoughts.

After that incident Lissa decided to keep me away while she changes the family law to protect me. I was then sent to Palm Springs, California and entered a human school, Amberwood Prep. Of course I wasn't sent there alone, Eddie Castile, a damphir was with me to serve as my bodyguard and also Adrian. They said that it's best for us to be around each other while we figure out ways to control the bond. We were also asisted by Sydney Sage, an Alchemist. Alchemists are humans who worked with us to keep our existence under the shadows of the night and also to protect their kind from having their souls corrupted in exchange of immortality. They have golden lilies on their cheeks with vampire blood and magic making them tougher. We passed ourselves as siblings so we can have reasons to be around each other. Living among humans was at first frightening. I was worried they might find out who i really was but fortunately I overcame it and actually made couple of human friends. I thought living there was steady and boring, I was wrong. If "steady and boring" means falling in love with a Moroi who we discovered was a former Strigoi who wants to be one again and awaken me for us to be together forever, falling in love with a human whom i know i can't be with, falling in love with Eddie who was with someone else and being kidnapped by humans who wants to kill Strigoi and Moroi, that was really steady and boring.
